Christmas Takeaways 2020 Singapore Nearly Complete Guide: Best Log Cake, Festive Ham & Turkey for the Yuletide Season

November 25, 2020 by Bino Leave a Comment

https://iwandered.net/christmas-takeaway-2020-log-cake-turkey-ham/

Perhaps more than ever, there will be a greater proportion of families and friends staying-in and celebrating Christmas at home with takeaways or food deliveries this year. Turkeys, ham and log cakes will once again grace dinner tables at home, as these items are practically a must when it comes to the Christmas dinner. For this year, dining establishments have been a bit slow in announcing their Christmas takeaway offerings, perhaps owing to the fluidity of the current situation. Nevertheless, I have tried to compile here what’s available at the moment, with a list of the must-have log cakes, ham and turkeys to order this season. This list of Christmas takeaways for 2020 will be expanded further, subject to new establishments coming live with their festive offerings so do check back regularly!

Since most establishments now allow for orders to be made online through their e-commerce sites, the use of certain credit cards may work to your favor, with up to 10x the points for online spend with cards like Citibank Rewards Card. Currently, you can get either S$300 as a cash reward or Sony Headphones worth S$349 if you sign up as a new Citibank cardholder. You can access the offer here.

Kele

kele tropical christmas roll cake with pear and pineapple

kele tropical christmas roll cake with pear and pineapple (source: kele)

Renowned bakery Kele has rolled out 4 limited edition Christmas roll cakes for 2020. This is the first time they have done up new flavors for Christmas. Weighing approximately 450 grams each or around 2.5x their usual roll cakes, these festive treats can feed an entire family. For chocolate fans, the Bailey Valrhona Chocolate Walnut Roll Cake (S$45.9) promises to delight with its rich layer of Valrhona dark chocolate while the Santa’s Embrace (S$43.9) which is my personal pick offers that comforting blend of banana and blueberry plus a bit of Valrhona chocolate. For those who have tried Kele’s tropical fruit or alcohol-based roll cakes, the Alcoholiday (S$42.9) packs a bit of a punch with its improved version of rum and raisin while the Tropical Christmas (S$43.9) delivers the sweetness of the holiday season with specially curated Williams pear and passionfruit in a roll cake. Kele typically does its fruit-flavored pastries with a generous amount of the actual fruit and both the pear and passionfruit as well as the banana blueberry roll cakes are no exceptions.  If you are a fan of Kele’s roll cakes like I am, it is definitely worth checking these out as the new flavors will be gone after December.

Each set comes with a bare Christmas roll cake plus the decorative ingredients you need to unleash your creativity. To really get into the festive spirit, ingredients such as granola bites, brownie chips and almond nut butter will make your pastry looking like an elaborate log cake in no time.

I have personally tried these juicy ribs, the secret being their house special black pepper sauce. Each order of the pork ribs also come with roasted potatoes and seasonal greens.

Log Cake: Some of the more creative flavors of log cake this year come from Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong. Their best seller each year is the Chendol Log Cake (S$65, 1kg) while for this year, a new flavor they are offering is the Ang Ku Kueh Log Cake (S$70, 1kg) which even comes with a peanut-coated crust.

Turkey: Expect a strong local flair with Christmas takeaways and deliveries from Baba Chews at Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong. Traditional components of the Christmas feast are still used like turkey, roast beef and log cakes but with a twist. For instance, their turkeys come in the form of a Laksa Turkey Pie (S$59) which is a play on the usual chicken pie but with laksa sauce. The Turkey Ngo Hiang Golden Pillow on the other hand is essentially turkey roulade baked in beancurd sheet and stuffed with minced turkey, pork, water chestnuts and vegetables.

Beef: For something different from the usual roast beef, I can personally recommend the Baba’s Beef Rendang (S$84, 1kg). Here, signature premium USDA prime beef short rib is stewed in fragrant spicy paste, coconut milk and gula Melaka. I have tried their beef and the meat fibers were so tender – easily collapsing after striking with a fork.

Baba Chews also provides for islandwide delivery on complimentary basis for orders of S$200 and above. S$15 surcharge applies for orders below this amount.

Goodwood Park Hotel

christmas holiday cabin log cake

Log Cake: The insta-worthy Christmas Holiday Cabin Log Cake (S$82) is heavily inspired by the Black Forest. The cake has milk chocolate ‘walls’ that surround a soft chocolate sponge layered with chocolate cream, studded with dark sweet cherries prepared in a compote of cherry juice and red wine. On the facade of the cake are iconic facets of the hotel – its Venetian windows are transformed into hand-piped arched windows and the Grand Tower wing is marked as a golden silhouette. The roof comprising housemade ladyfingers is graced with a light ‘snowfall’ of Chantilly cream, and for a dash of sparkle, silver and gold white chocolate beads and gold flakes.

Crispy ‘Char Siew’ Turkey with Pine Nuts Kataifi

Turkey: For something different from the usual turkey, check out Goodwood Park Hotel’s turkey dishes which has all the trappings of Min Jiang’s dimsum heritage. I have personally tried the Crispy ‘Char Siew’ Turkey with Pine Nuts Kataifi (S$38 for 8pcs). This delicious snack is generously filled with juicy ‘char siew’ turkey breast encased in crisp kataifi pastry. I could not help but munch on one piece after the other especially with the crispy skin. Although marketed as a takeaway item, this dish is best consumed without microwave heating. Another turkey dish to check out is the Shredded Turkey with Leek in Sesame Pockets (S$38 for 8pcs) which was inspired by traditional shao bing. This dish involves some DIY, with diners filling the sesame pockets with their desired amount of meat, vegetables and sauce.

SwissBake

Cakes: The new Dark Chocolate Cherry Log Cake (S$42, 800g) is a must-have treat at the festive dining table. Chocolate mousse is richly featured here as are tangy red cherries. This is a log cake to consider if you prefer something with less of the fluffy cream and more of the decadent chocolate. My personal pick would have to be their memorable Spiced Apple Cheesecake ($42 for 1kg). Not too heavy which is a pleasant surprise for a cheesecake, this sweet treat is infused with the flavors of winter fruits and spices on a cookie base, finished with light cream cheese, spiced apples and irresistible speculoos biscuits. For the traditionalists, the Festive Fruit Cake ($22.90/600g) is dense and heavy given its small size. The cake is baked with the finest butter and studded with delightful bursts of candied fruits and nuts.

Pies: I personally like SwissBake’s pies so it was quite a treat for me to check out their seasonal Christmas pies (S$5.20 each / S$47 for a box of 9) which are sized for individual consumption. The pies are available in three comforting variants – Seafood Chowder, Turkey Ham & Cheese, and Beef Stew – and make for excellent morning or afternoon snacks even outside of the festive season.

Porta

porta’s black cod (source: porta)

Festive Meal Bundle: Porta at Park Hotel Clarke Quay will be offering a four-course festive spread, available for self-collection or delivery between 4pm to 8pm on 24th to 27th, 31st December 2020 and 1st January 2021. The menu celebrates modern European fare with nuances of the festive season. Start off with the Butternut Pumpkin Soup, a culinary symbol of the season’s warmth. Second course is Hokkaido Scallops – specifically 3 plump pieces of it served with avruga caviar, crumbled bacon bits and a small bed of salad. For mains, there is a choice between pan-seared Black Cod or the Beef Tenderloin cooked in medium rare. I have tried both and would personally recommend going for the buttery and melt-in-your mouth cod instead. I particularly like the tomato sauce that comes with the fish. It isn’t a run-of-the-mill sauce but rather a hearty one that comes with chorizo and generous amounts of chickpeas. In a way, the sauce acts as a side of carbohydrates in itself. For dessert, the meal ends with a slice of Chocolate Log Cake. The festive set meal at Porta is priced at S$66+ per person.

Islandwide delivery of the Christmas set meal is available for S$15 with no minimum order. Free delivery applies for orders of S$100+ and above (essentially with at least 2x servings of the set meal).

Dates: 24 to 27, 31 December 2020 & 1 January 2021
