Man Fu Yuan 满福苑 (2018) at InterContinental Singapore – Refreshed Modern Concept

April 16, 2018 by Bino Leave a Comment

Man Fu Yuan (满福苑) at InterContinental Singapore requires no introduction. The Chinese restaurant has been generally recognized as one of the best in the island for Cantonese cuisine. It is also perhaps one of the more theatrical Chinese restaurants around, with Chef Eric Neo always putting on a show with dishes surrounded by the likes of dry ice and a whole suckling pig which is the talk of the town.

It was thus a bit surprising to me that despite this winning formula, the venue underwent a makeover recently. If you visit Man Fu Yuan nowadays, you’ll notice that the tablecloth is gone and this is replaced with dark wooden tables and fine cutlery that won’t look out of place in Ash & Elm just downstairs.

Sunday Brunch Buffet at Melt Cafe (2018) Mandarin Oriental Singapore

April 9, 2018 by Bino Leave a Comment

Melt Cafe at Mandarin Oriental Singapore has revamped its Sunday champagne brunch buffet to now feature some welcome additions such as a roving magician, enhanced Japanese section, imaginative desserts, a whole spring lamb and various healthy options to spruce up the weekend meal. The all-day dining restaurant is generally recognized to have one of the best Sunday brunches in Singapore and I was curious as to see how the weekend spread looked like over here. While I have been to this venue several times for its buffet, I had not yet tried their Sunday brunch until recently. I was invited over to check out the bountiful selection over a sunny Sunday afternoon.

If you have been to Melt Cafe before to dine in one of its popular buffets, you would notice that the new setup has caused certain food stations to be relocated. Where once, the Japanese and salad counters shared the same space; the Japanese section is now found at the far end of the buffet while the fruits and juices sections are placed together to promote a more holistic health offering. Here, you’ll find fresh orange, pineapple, cucumber juices and a special drink of the day.

Weekend Brunch at Akira Back (2018 Revamp) – A Japanese Affair

April 8, 2018 by Bino Leave a Comment

Akira Back at JW Marriott Singapore South Beach has recently revamped their weekend brunch with a new menu revolving around eight dishes that can be personalized to one’s preference. This is a slight departure from the previous weekend brunch concept at Akira Back which had four mains, two desserts and free-flow tempura. Given the venue’s Korean-inspired Japanese cuisine, Akira Back’s brunch menu deviates from your usual Japanese meal. You’ll find pizza interspersed with chirashi, spring chickens to go along with tempura – slight accents to separate it from your usual Japanese affairs.

With the revamped brunch menu and addition of two more courses, the price remains the same at S$98. Those who prefer variety would find the revamp more compelling.

Le Binchotan at Amoy Street (2018) – From Uni & Caviar to Edible Charcoal

March 18, 2018 by Bino Leave a Comment

Having passed by the inconspicuous Gemmill Lane a couple of times, I’ve always been intrigued by that 35-seater restaurant with interiors mimicking that of a train tunnel. Le Binchotan has been around for a couple of years now and was recently taken over by Chef-Owner Jeremmy Chiam who has had successful stints at Iggy’s and the Jewel Box in Mt. Faber. Recently, I was invited over to check out the French-Japanese fusion restaurant for the new menu that Chef Jeremmy introduced.

We started off the dinner with the Uni & Caviar (S$25), a visually striking dish. As suggested by the name, this is not your typical corn mousse. The highlight is the generous layer of caviar, shoyu pearls and bafun uni on top which really adds a nice sweet-salty contrast. I love the creamy nature of the corn mousse which is made even creamier by the supple pieces of fresh uni. For something this premium, you’d expect the price to be inaccessible but at $25, it’s reasonable. This is Chef Jeremmy’s way of thanking clients for their patronage. Le Binchotan has had a number of repeat customers just for this starter.

Sunday Brunch at Bayswater Kitchen – Fine Views of Keppel Bay

March 7, 2018 by Bino Leave a Comment

Bayswater Kitchen in picturesque Keppel Island must be one of the most compelling places to have Sunday brunch in Singapore. With fine views of the picturesque marina and the striking “Reflections” condo in the distance, it’s just the place I would imagine enjoying my eggs benedict on a day that’s free from the thought of work.

Recently, I was invited down to Bayswater Kitchen as they launched their first ever brunch menu. The venue is part of The Prive Group and guests actually enter Bayswater Kitchen via the Prive restaurant in front of it.

The maritime theme is palpable from the moment you enter with different shades of blue contrasted against familiar motifs such as a giant octopus. This is done without being tacky at all – the look remains sharp as is the case with Prive restaurants in my experience.

Guide to Chinese New Year 2018 Promotions in Singapore: Reunion Dinners, Buffets, Yu Sheng, Set Menus and Festive Takeaways

January 17, 2018 by Bino Leave a Comment

Chinese New Year in 2018 will occur on the 16th of February and in the Chinese zodiac, the coming lunar year will be the “Year of the Dog.” For the coming festive season, various hotels and restaurants in Singapore are once again showcasing their very best for reunion dinners, lo heis as well as festive takeaways. What I noticed this year is that restaurants are trying to outdo each other in terms of who has the most premium yu sheng or pen cai with pretty creative interpretations to choose from. I’ve seen relatively unique ingredients being included such as truffles, imperial swiftlet’s nest and even foie gras while others are sticking to their traditional best sellers. Whatever it is you’re after, you will certainly be spoiled for choice for that reunion dinner venue. Here’s a guide on this year’s offers:

Moosehead Kitchen & Bar – New Menu (2017/2018)

December 10, 2017 by Bino Leave a Comment

The unassuming space that is Moosehead Kitchen & Bar in Telok Ayer Street has always piqued my interest. As I am constantly on the lookout for interesting dining spots to try near my workplace, I’ve gone through the many eateries around Telok Ayer and Amoy Street. I love the thriving scene of independent restaurants in the area and some of them are personal favorites. Moosehead Kitchen and Bar is an oddity to me despite having tried the venue for lunch before. Its midday menu mostly consists of quick fixes such as burgers (which are great as well!) but it is the dinner offerings which really stand out.

Three years after discovering the venue, I finally managed to try Moosehead Kitchen and Bar for dinner and I must say the food did not disappoint. Three years is a mighty long time for a small venue such as Moosehead and the fact that they are still attracting a good crowd to this day probably says a lot regarding the food here.

NEW: Wakanui Grill Dining at Marine One, Singapore – Dry-Aged Beef & Spring Lamb

December 10, 2017 by Bino Leave a Comment

Wakanui Grill Dining, the steakhouse that used to be located in Boat Quay, has been relaunched in Marina One as a direct franchise from the original outlet in Tokyo. While the name of the restaurant may at first seem consistent with its Japanese origins, Wakanui is actually a town in New Zealand or more specifically in the Canterbury Region which is also where the beef comes from. The house specialties include the dry-aged Ocean Beef which is produced from the Angus breed as well as the spring lamb. I have long been curious about the dining options at the new Marina One complex and jumped at the chance to try Wakanui when the opportunity presented itself.
