Review: Botanico at The Garage – New Menu In This Singapore Botanic Gardens Stunner

August 16, 2018 by Bino Leave a Comment

Botanico which is located at the upper storey of The Garage – a colonial building in the middle of the Singapore Botanic Gardens – is as much a feast for the eyes as it is a feast for the taste buds. With the alfresco area draped in vines and electric lights and with a view of the shrubbery of the Botanic Gardens, the ambiance is quite unlike any other restaurant in Singapore.

I was there in the evening but imagine the whole scene would work just as well, if not even better during the day. This is a place where I could imagine people would spend lazy afternoons watching the world go by. Other than the beautiful space, the cuisine here has been getting quite a bit of buzz as well. The new head chef, Sujatha Asokan, has come onboard to showcase her flavors – western with a distinct local sensibility. Recently, I dropped by Botanico to check out the new menu.

Labyrinth – Michelin-Starred Singapore Food That Will Make You Think

August 5, 2018 by Bino Leave a Comment

Labyrinth is not the restaurant you go to if all you’re after is to have reliable and tasty Singaporean food. You’d be better off in a hawker center if that was your sole intention.  The type of local cuisine presented in this venue helmed by Chef Han Li Guang is so carefully deconstructed that dining here is very much an experience that defies the traditional concept of eating. It is probably no wonder then that Labyrinth has won a number of awards, the most prominent being the Michelin Star it has had for a few years. Truly, this is a place for the thinking and discerning gourmand.

I was recently invited to check out the revamped menu at Labyrinth. Chef Han Li Guang himself attributes his cuisine as a constant work in development that mirrors where he is in his personal and professional life. Similarly, the new menu has evolved from one that showcases fancier versions of local favorites to one that shows off the bounties of local produce. For a country that is just over 700 square kilometers, it is probably hard to picture farms and fisheries where one can get local produce but Labyrinth’s new menu shows exactly that – through postcards that tell stories and inspirations behind each dish. The new “Homage to My Singapore” menu comes in three versions – lunch, pre-theater (the restaurant is located in Esplanade after all) and dinner. My visit to Labyrinth coincided with dinner which is offered at S$178++ per person.

Madame Fan by Alan Yau – Etiquette Free Chinese Fine Dining in NCO Club

July 23, 2018 by Bino Leave a Comment

The NCO Club opened earlier this year as a lifestyle destination within the upscale South Beach precinct. Within the conservation building’s halls are four venues:

  • Madame Fan is a 222-seater Chinese restaurant conceptualized by restaurateur Alan Yau
  • Cool Cats is a jazz bar inconspicuously tucked away from the rest of NCO Club by a doorway (which happens to have excellent soundproofing!) with a live band playing every night
  • Fish Pool is a champagne and oyster bar set beside a diving pool. If you come here on the right evening, you may catch a mermaid swimming in full view!
  • Stags’ Room is an intimate wine lounge that has a decor that doesn’t look out of place in exclusive gentlemen’s clubs

Recently, I was invited to check out The NCO Club – particularly the Chinese restaurant Madame Fan for a progressive and etiquette-free dining experience.

A Look at Scoot’s Inflight Meals – What to Order When You Fly (KIX – SIN)

July 15, 2018 by Bino Leave a Comment

Scoot is Singapore Airline’s budget carrier arm. The airline flies to many regional destinations as well as some long-haul. The carrier has even started to fly to places such as Honolulu, Athens and Berlin. The bulk of the food offerings with Scoot is pretty much standardized. The only exception are those routes that are too far or where the plane isn’t making a direct turnaround back to Singapore. For these flights, the food menu gets a bit interesting.

Check out my review of ScootBiz here

Those flying on Scoot’s ex-KIX (Osaka) get a treat in terms of a special menu with hot meals that are entirely distinct from those the carrier offers on any other route. The main reason for this is that the aircraft for ex-KIX flights don’t immediately come from Singapore and as such, Scoot needs to get a caterer from KIX to prepare the meals. The aircraft ex-SIN usually comes from either Taipei or Honolulu.

SKIRT, W Singapore Sentosa Cove (2018) – More Than Just Steaks at “The Boldest Grill”

July 12, 2018 by Bino 1 Comment

Entering its 6th year of operation, SKIRT at W Singapore Sentosa Cove has reinvented itself as “the boldest grill” as it seeks to move out of the typical steakhouse stereotype. Its latest menu offers a smattering of European dishes with a distinct Asian influence. Think “laksa octopus” or carpaccio flavored with a dash of saffron yuzu. Regulars who come all the way to Sentosa Cove to sample SKIRT’s steaks will be relieved to find that the meats are still there, albeit with less variety than before. Despite all these changes, the venue has retained its intimate and quiet nature – perfect for dates or small business gatherings.

The new menu at SKIRT comes from Chef Justin Dingle Garciyya who came in as culinary director in late 2017 after having stints in various properties in Australia, New York, Miami and Qatar; including some Michelin-starred restaurants.

New Menu (2018) at Racines, Sofitel Singapore City Centre

July 10, 2018 by Bino Leave a Comment

I have written about Racines in Sofitel Singapore City Centre a number of times and frequented the restaurant even more. I have always loved how the restaurant is able to keep two distinct cuisines without being regarded as a fusion restaurant. The French and Chinese dishes are equally good and if it weren’t for the relatively high end dining proposition, I would be there more often.

Racines has not been around for a year yet but it recently launched a new menu with some refreshing changes. First of all, there are now more affordable options (seems like my wish has been answered) with a S$28++ lunch set for two courses. Also, you’ll now observe that many dishes in the new menu are lower in price. This is because some of the newer dishes have been made deliberately smaller to cater to individual portions. I was recently invited to check out the new menu at Racines. I can’t recall any restaurant revisits I’ve done recently that I was as excited about as this one.
