3 Traditional Areas to Transport You to Old Time Tokyo

August 1, 2017 by Bino 1 Comment

Mention Tokyo and the first impressions that come to mind probably won’t stray away from neon lights, innovative gadgets and concrete jungles. What many do not realize is that Tokyo is one of the oldest big cities in the world. Its population had already topped 1 million in the year 1800 which would have given rise to a large swathe of historical sites scattered around town. Unfortunately, many of them were destroyed during the war. Today, it is still very much possible to see the other, more traditional side of Tokyo if you know where to look. With their narrow streets, colorful shops as well as remarkable architecture; these pockets of nostalgia offer a great contrast to the modernity which Japan’s capital is known for.

The Perfect 1-Week Itinerary For Bhutan

July 15, 2017 by Bino 3 Comments

It has been nearly 7 years since I first ventured into the little known thunder dragon kingdom of Bhutan on a fateful morning from Bangkok. This country – sandwiched between China and India – remains one of the least visited places in the world. It was a long time dream that brought me here and during my own experience going around the country, I would have to say that my fascination with Bhutan only grew. There is a strong sense of spirituality that permeates the land – one that is only accentuated by the scenery and the kindhearted nature of the locals. By the end of the trip, I was totally relaxed in a way that no private resort could ever impel me.

Bhutan is a highly mountainous country and a trip from one end to another could easily take weeks. The classic route which takes around a week brings you from Paro where most international flights land to as far as Punakha. This gives you a good overview of the country. Here are my suggestions on some attractions in Bhutan that you shouldn’t miss for a one week trip.

Lake Garda – Why You Should Visit This Underrated Slice of Northern Italy (With Itinerary)

June 26, 2017 by Bino 4 Comments

Midway during my trip to Moscow and St. Petersburg in May this year, I received an invitation to visit a place called Lake Garda in Italy. Having been to this Southern European country a few times, the name piqued my curiosity. I have heard of Lake Como – that body of water just north of Milan filled with mansions owned by celebrities. Then there’s also Carezza, the baby blue lake in Italy’s alpine region. But I have to say I had not known about Lake Garda before.

Moscow or St. Petersburg – Which Russian City Is Better?

June 4, 2017 by Bino 7 Comments

As two of the most popular tourist destinations in Russia, most travelers who visit the world’s largest countries end up making their way to both Moscow and St. Petersburg. Both cities have a wealth of attractions, including palaces, churches as well as exciting culinary and nightlife scenes. But what if you find yourself able to visit only one – should you visit Moscow or St. Petersburg? Alternatively, if you have time for both, in which city do you spend more days?

During a recent trip to Russia, I had a similar problem deciding. My trip allowed me to visit both cities but I was not sure in the beginning whether I should stay for more days in Moscow or St. Petersburg. As such, the comparison I am going to do here applies both to those trying to allocate the number of days between the two cities as well as those who have enough time to visit only one,

Dapitan City Travel Guide – Things to Do, Tourist Attractions and Suggested Itinerary For This Historic City in Northern Mindanao

May 21, 2017 by Bino 1 Comment

Dapitan City in Zamboanga del Norte has long been in my bucket list of places to visit in the Philippines. This town in the northern part of Mindanao has long been under the tourist radar although it has been featured in quite a few publications over the years. Dapitan City is most well-known for being the place of exile of Philippine national hero, Jose Rizal, and has plenty of historic sites for visitors to explore over a weekend. The city is also known for Dakak, a beach resort which has managed to capture the imagination of local tourists due to heavy promotion back in the 1990s.

During a recent trip across the northern coast of Mindanao, I finally had a chance to visit Dapitan. I was able to cover both this city and the neighboring town, Dipolog City over two days. These were the places I visited:

The Best Things to Do in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – More Than Just a Pitstop to the Great Outdoors

April 18, 2017 by Bino 3 Comments

Mongolia may be known more for its great outdoors, yurt stays and other natural attractions but any visitor to this North Asian country will inevitably find themselves in Ulaanbaatar at least once during their trip. For many years, the Mongolian capital was nothing more than a large town with several ger (yurt) districts surrounding the compact city center but the resources boom of the past years has brought a new life to the city with luxury hotels, skyscrapers and upscale malls now dotting the urban landscape. For visitors to Ulaanbaatar, there are enough attractions to keep one busy for a few days at least.

How I Crossed the Wagah Border From India to Pakistan By Foot (and Vice Versa)

March 28, 2017 by Bino 29 Comments

During a recent trip to Amritsar in India and armed with a Pakistan visa, I decided to travel to Lahore for a couple of days. Both cities are only around 50 kilometers apart and as I was quite curious about the region’s other cultural capital, I decided to travel to Lahore by crossing the Wagah border from the India side.

The two countries actually share a border that spans almost three thousand kilometers but the Wagah border is the only point that is open for foreigners to cross. According to Foreign Policy (FP) magazine, the India-Pakistan border is one of the most dangerous in the world. My experience was actually quite pleasant and it’s one of the easiest international land crossings I have done so far.
