The Perfect Barcelona Itinerary

October 13, 2021 by Bino 4 Comments

Most visitors deem Barcelona as Spain’s most attention-grabbing city and it’s not hard to see why. Out-of-this-world designs, chic bars, a strong culinary tradition and a plethora of things to see and do all make Barcelona the usual first stop in Spain and for many, the preeminent impression of the country. A closer look however, reveals a complex heritage. For starters, majority of the signs in the city are not even in Spanish. They are in Catalan, the native language of Catalonia, the region where Barcelona is situated. In fact, whenever I made the effort of speaking to the locals in Spanish, I would be replied to in English. People here are staunchly Catalan in identity.

While Madrid is the political center of Spain, Barcelona is its commercial and financial heart. And while most European cities can be classified as renaissance, baroque or medieval, Barcelona appears to be more contemporary. Skyscrapers, which are less common in Europe than they are in America or Asia, are prevalent here in all shapes and forms. And of course, one cannot talk about Barcelona’s cityscape without mentioning Gaudi. Arguably one of the top reasons to visit the city, this architect’s unique vision means that many of Barcelona’s buildings appear like nowhere else in the world, leaving visitors in awe at how one man’s ideas can appear so intense, colorful and bursting with so much life.

This guide shows you how you can visit Barcelona for 2 or 3 days.

Review: Bedrock Origin at Oasia Resort Sentosa

October 12, 2021 by Bino Leave a Comment

Bedrock launched its second restaurant in September 2021 – Bedrock Origin – at the new Oasia Resort Sentosa. As with the original outlet, Bedrock Origin also aims to make a mark when it comes to steaks while reflecting its coastal location thru a selection of seafood items as well. In support of Oasia Resort Sentosa’s wellness lifestyle, Bedrock Origin also offers plant-based alternatives and keto-friendly options.

The interiors of Bedrock Origin can be best described as sleek, with hues of olive and plum blending into the leather furniture giving it that flexibility between day and night. At night, the dim mood lighting evokes the masculinity typically associated with steakhouses but in the day, the colors serve to accentuate the natural light that comes in from the glass doors.

For those who prefer alfresco dining, guests can also choose to sit in the shaded verandah and alfresco outdoor terrace. The area offers a mix between outdoor dining tables/chairs as well as more relaxing sofa-style seating. The outdoor area overlooks a relatively quiet section of Sentosa, despite the monorail being only a few steps away.

Guide to Accor Plus – Is It Worth Signing Up For This Membership Programme?

October 11, 2021 by Bino 1 Comment

Accor Plus is a membership programme run by Accor – the same group behind iconic hotel chains such as Sofitel, Raffles, Fairmont, Novotel, Mercure and ibis. As one of the largest hotel chains in the world, the group manages thousands of hotels worldwide, from the ultra-luxurious to budget-friendly options.

Note: If you stumbled upon this article due to the new DBS Vantage Card, check out my review of the card here

The Accor Plus programme is essentially a paid membership where members get to enjoy perks such as complimentary hotel nights, discounts for room bookings, an upgraded loyalty programme membership tier as well as up to 50% off on dining at the hotels’ restaurants.

Membership to the Accor Plus programme essentially comes in three tiers. The first is the Traveller tier (S$298), followed by the Explorer tier (S$408) and the highest one is Explorer Plus (S$528). The difference between these three tiers is the number of complimentary nights that comes with the membership, this being 0, 1 and 2 nights respectively.

Review: Firangi Superstar Indian Cuisine @ Tanjong Pagar

October 9, 2021 by Bino Leave a Comment

firangi superstar (source: firangi superstar)

In an era where traveling has become restrictive and sometimes punishing, there comes an Indian restaurant that aims to satiate an outsider’s or wanderer’s thirst for something new. Firangi Superstar was established only a couple of months back to present a foreigner’s perspective of the vast country. Even the name, which means “foreigner” in Hindi, is a play on this concept. The whimsical interiors draw inspiration from iconic tourist attractions such as the City Palace in Udaipur (made famous by James Bond) as well as Hollywood movies filmed in India such as The Darjeeling Limited. Even without a single bite, one finds that a visit to Firangi Superstar is already a feast for the senses.

The Perfect Berlin Itinerary

October 3, 2021 by Bino Leave a Comment

Those who come to Berlin expecting the quintessential if not stereotypical European experience of cobblestone streets, baroque/gothic/renaissance buildings at every turn and people dressed in touristy medieval costumes will be in for a disappointment. As the capital of Europe’s mightiest economy, Berlin at once reflects practical German attitudes as well as the rebuilding that occurred after World War II. Having been bombed to almost nothing 60 years ago and the distinction of being the world’s most famous divided city have made the urban landscape of the German capital quite unique compared to its European counterparts.

Despite not having the old world beauty of Prague or the music heritage that Vienna is known for, Berlin is easily one of Europe’s most interesting cities with several fun attractions and nightlife options to last a couple of days. Berlin is made up of several neighborhoods, each very distinct. The city is best appreciated via walking tours and since Berlin is quite spread out, each interesting neighborhood deserves some time for exploration. Here, I suggest a sample itinerary you can follow and the top neighborhoods to visit. You can also segregate these areas based on the places to stay in Berlin.

Review: Origin Grill and Bar | Excellent Steaks at Shangri-la Hotel Singapore

September 30, 2021 by Bino Leave a Comment

Origin Grill and Bar first opened towards the end of 2017 at the ground floor of Shangri-la Hotel Singapore, replacing the former Japanese restaurant, Nadaman. In those few short years, it has risen above the ranks of Singapore’s best steakhouses with a menu that has undergone a few changes over the years but with a keen focus on different cuts of beef from various regions.

Origin is not only about the steaks as well. It’s equally known for its wide array of cocktails and wines. Some of the non-beef dishes are also pretty stellar.

I returned to Origin on the eve of more restrictions in Singapore’s dining scene. Both the main dining hall and bar area were busy with parties of 5 going for their last meetups in a while.

Review: Garden@One-Ninety | Hidden Section of One-Ninety Bar at Four Seasons Singapore

September 28, 2021 by Bino Leave a Comment

Those looking for a relatively hidden or obscure place to dine in Singapore might be surprised to find one right smack in the city’s shopping district. Four Seasons Singapore recently renovated the outdoor area of One Ninety Bar, calling this extension Garden@One-Ninety. Although Garden@One-Ninety is not really marketed as a separate venue, the lush ambiance and presence of verdant foliage make it look like so. Garden@One-Ninety also has a distinct menu, with a keen focus on seasonal greens and plant-based options. As an extension of the bar, one can also find a myriad of drinks here with a similar focus.

The Perfect 2-Day Itinerary for Carmel & Monterey

September 18, 2021 by Bino 1 Comment

Monterey and Carmel are two of the most popular destinations in California’s Central Coast, but they’re best seen as a pair. Located around 2 hours’ drive from San Francisco, these twin destinations are popular for weekend trips from the City by the Bay. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is one of the world’s top 10 aquariums, and it has quickly become a must-see tourist attraction for visitors to Monterey. Some people like to combine their visit with a day trip to Pebble Beach Golf Links or Point Lobos State Reserve; others prefer to stay in Monterey and explore its charming downtown area.

This sample itinerary aims to show how you can cover the two towns of Monterey or Carmel in as little as 2 days. This can be easily done as a weekend trip out from the Bay Area or as part of a wider trip tracing California’s coastline.
