To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Pan Pacific Singapore, Hai Tien Lo has launched 30 signature claypot dishes featuring specialties such as Nyonya Claypot Prawns and Roast Duck with Sea Cucumber. The dishes are priced reasonably at SGD 22 to SGD 28 per claypot. There is also currently a promotion where any two claypot dishes could be had for just SGD 33.30 for dinner from Sundays to Wednesdays. This is a really good deal by Hai Tien Lo’s standards as two claypot dishes could be shared by two or even three people for a respectable dinner.
I tried around twenty of the thirty claypot dishes during a recent media preview of the new promotion. Overall, I found the variety to be a good mix between meat dishes (pork, beef, chicken and duck all well-represented) and seafood (prawns and fish). Many of the dishes could be thought of as comfort food, the type that family and friends would share over a lovely evening while recounting happy times.
In particular, I found the beef dishes to be excellent. The meat was tender and flavorful with a very smooth texture that stood out against the mixed vegetables.
Other meat dishes to try include the Pork Shoulder with Bitter Gourd in Black Bean Sauce and Chicken with Pine Mushrooms in Szechuan Dried Chili which come with huge contrasts in flavors. These round up my top picks for the meat dishes.
My favorite claypot dish among the 20 I tried has got to be the Grouper Fillet with Vermicelli in Chef’s Signature Homemade XO Chili Sauce. The fish was sweet with the flavor extending all the way to the vermicelli. It was also a crowd favorite – with many people in my table nodding their agreement as they slurped their way into the strands of fine glass noodles.
While not strictly a seafood dish, diners may also enjoy the Roasted Duck with Sea Cucumber in Abalone Sauce. If you’re gunning for the $33.30 for 2 claypots promotion and seeking the most value-for-money dish, this is perhaps one of the more premium claypot items on the menu. Other that this hearty dish, the Nyonya Claypot Prawns with Superior Soya Sauce and Chili also beckons.
While I do prefer the meat and seafood dishes, veggie lovers are also not left out. Claypots to try among the greens include Spinach with Dried Scallops, Kai Lan and Preserved Vegetables with Ginger Spring Onions and French Bean with Minced Pork and Preserved Vegetables.
Rice is not included in the promotion. It is available separately for SGD 1.80 per bowl but you can always finish off the meal with one or two of the noodle dishes. These include Vermicelli with Scallops and Aubergine and Noodles with Mixed Vegetables in Abalone Sauce.
