Surf & Turf Tuesday Dinner Buffet at Edge in Pan Pacific Singapore

Edge at Pan Pacific Singapore has recently revamped their Tuesday dinner buffets, replacing the Cuts @ Edge promotion that ran on Tuesday nights. Diners can now get the best of both seafood and meat with the new Surf & Turf buffet, a carefully curated offering that punches above its weight in terms of variety for a weekday hotel dinner buffet.

I was recently invited for a tasting session to check out exactly what the Surf & Turf buffet spread had to offer. I was immediately thrown off by what I saw. Buckets of fresh prawns, clams, scallops and Alaskan crab greeted me as I entered Edge. For a minute there, I thought that I had stepped into another Sunday brunch due to the premium seafood available.

The Japanese section has your usual sashimi – salmon and tuna but I was pleased to see a third type, swordfish, for the weekday buffet. The spreads at Edge typically include some creatively-interpreted chirashi  and for Surf and Turf, I spotted some Torched Wagyu Beef with Salmon Chirashi.

I still have pleasant memories of the Peranakan and Indian sections from the Sunday champagne brunch at Edge and the selection for Surf & Turf closely matched that. The hard-to-miss prawn satay was a familiar sight at the buffet station while Nyonya favorites such as Ayam Buah Keluak  also make an appearance here.

A notable addition to the Indian section is the Surf and Turf 65, which comprise of chicken cooked in tandoori style and mixed with squid inside a spiced batter. If you love Indian food, the South Asian section here is sure to get approval with its variety of curries and dhall.

I was surprised to find a couple of semi-exotic dishes here – i.e. those which one can rarely expect to find in a hotel buffet setting. An example is the Chicken and Shrimp Jambalaya which allows one to have a taste of the rich New Orleans cuisine. Then there is also the rich Spanish Seafood Stew with Chorizo, a comfort food which stays true to its Iberian origins.

The traditional dishes were just as good. In fact, I spent most of my time trying the Beef Lasagna as well as the BBQ Pork Ribs that night.

One of the highlights of the Tuesday buffet is the roast section. As a centerpiece, a whole baby lamb graces the buffet table (only thing missing is the head!). This is supplemented by a slab of wagyu rump which goes with a variety of sauces.

As if this is not enough red meat to unleash one’s carnivorous tendencies, Edge has a separate Grill Station where diners can choose the types of meat they want for cooking. There are various kinds of sausages, lamb chops, beef and even seafood which can be grilled upon request to one’s preferred doneness.

While I usually skip loading up on carbohydrates when at a buffet, I made an exception at Edge when I saw not one but four types of pizzas just waiting to be devoured! I really love a good pizza and even a regular margherita with cheese and tomatoes is enough to satisfy me. So imagine my delight when I saw a Spicy Beef Bulgogi Pizza with Shrimps in the pizza section.  Be sure to have these thin-crust slices at the beginning of the meal when they come fresh from the oven. Or you can always ask the chef to heat it up for you!

If you remember, I mentioned when I wrote about Edge’s Sunday champagne brunch that the dessert spread is so plentiful that it could very well stand as a buffet of its own. With memories of that still fresh in my mind, I crossed over to the dessert station and found the weekday spread to be no less of a compromise. Perennial favorites such as Durian Pengat and Matcha Chocolate Cubes were still there along with other interesting items such as Gold-coated Eclairs, Apple Crumble, Homemade Ice Cream and even a decadent Chocolate Fountain. For something more traditional, there is a separate section featuring many different kinds of kueh. All in all, there were just too many sweet endings to choose from that it’s difficult to try them all coming with just one tummy.

Overall, I found the Surf and Turf dinner buffet to be a great dinner offering that fills a void in the current Singapore buffet scene. While most establishments tend to tone down their weekday buffets or choose to focus on a specific theme (i.e. seafood, local cuisine, etc), Edge not only delivers on the premium goods but still offers what is a very holistic range of dishes that don’t look out of place in pricier weekend meals.
