Xiu Fine Cantonese Dining in Greenhills, San Juan

January 1, 2017 by Bino Leave a Comment

I recently dropped by Xiu Fine Cantonese Dining in Connecticut Street during one of my longer visits to Manila. I first heard about the restaurant when it was featured quite heavily in social media a few months back with photos of dishes that until then were not to be found anywhere in the city. If you are familiar with the area where Xiu is, you would notice that the restaurant occupies the same space as Lugang previously.

The venue is quite nicely done. Hand painted wall designs, elegant chandeliers and paintings depicting scenes from turn-of-the-century China bring a decidedly refined ambiance. Spread across three stories, the lower floor caters to walk-in customers and small groups while private rooms can be found in the upper floors to cater to meetings, parties and other functions. If you are looking to impress, this is one compelling venue to consider.

White Rose Cafe: Penang Hawkers’ Fare

December 19, 2016 by Bino Leave a Comment

The hugely popular Penang Hawker’s Fare is back at White Rose Café with 12 hawkers specially handpicked by York Hotel to fly into Singapore to whip up perennial favorites such as Char Kway Teow, Penang Laksa, Cuttlefish Kang Kong and Ban Chang Kueh. This is also the 30th anniversary of the Penang Hawker’s Fare so diners can expect a few extras for this particular round.

The Penang hawkers will be in York Hotel for slightly over two weeks which makes it pretty convenient if you’re in the Orchard area to do some Christmas shopping. I was invited for a media tasting during the first day of the buffet and was pleasantly surprised to find the dining hall already brimming with people. As with previous years, the buffet stations are arranged by dish. You can eat as much as you like during the duration of the meal but do note that you can get up to two plates each time you queue.

One Ninety at Four Seasons Singapore – Market Fresh Semi-Buffet

December 17, 2016 by Bino Leave a Comment

One Ninety, the all-day dining restaurant in Four Seasons Singapore, has recently revamped its famous Market Fresh semi-buffet by including around 30 main dishes that can be ordered ala minute alongside a buffet spread featuring a myriad of appetizers and desserts. Recently, I had the opportunity to check out the venue for the very first time and I must say I was impressed.

You can also read about my other reviews of Singapore buffets here.

Hotel Review: Marina Mandarin Singapore

December 13, 2016 by Bino Leave a Comment

Located right in the heart of Marina Bay, the Marina Mandarin Singapore is one of the flagship properties of the Meritus Hotels and Resorts. Just steps away from Marina Square and Suntec City (two major shopping malls in Singapore), the 575-room hotel was built in 1987 and designed by John Portman. It boasts of a magnificent atrium – probably one of the most attractive in Singapore and certainly a feast to architecture buffs. I recall staying here some 9 years back and remember being pleasantly surprised by the his and her sinks found even at the entry-level rooms. Recently, I had another opportunity to check out the property – this time at a different room category.

My room for this particular stay was a Premier Room which is located within the 16th to the 19th floor of the hotel. Renovated a couple of years ago, it sported a contemporary and elegant look that differentiated it from the base level rooms of the hotel. The first thing you will notice as you enter the room is how bright it is. The color scheme is highly pleasing to the eyes – light and lacking of any garish décor. At the far end, you will also see a balcony which opens up to views of the City Hall area. The glass panels are actually floor-to-ceiling which also allows plenty of light to come in.

Hotel Review: The Club Residences at Capella Singapore – Serviced Apartments in Sentosa

December 11, 2016 by Bino Leave a Comment

Many are familiar with the ultra-luxury resort that is Capella Singapore in Sentosa. One of the top-rated hotels in the country, it’s also one of the more popular staycation options among Singaporeans (the rooms even at entry-level are huge). I have also written about this lush property previously, having stayed twice before in various room types. I highly enjoy the tranquil environment. If you fancy spending a weekend away from the crowds, you’re hard-pressed to find a venue that’s more conducive.

You can check out my review of the resort section of Capella Singapore here.

Not a lot of people are probably aware that Capella Singapore also has a serviced residences arm. With 62 suites, 10 penthouse units and 9 manors; The Club Residences – as the serviced apartments are called – actually comprises a significant proportion of the resort. Recently, I had an opportunity to check out this side of the property for two nights to see how it compares to other serviced residences in Singapore.

Man Ho in Marriott Manila – Fine Cantonese Cuisine at the New West Wing

December 8, 2016 by Bino Leave a Comment

After coming back from Hong Kong, I found myself craving for some Roast Goose.  It occurred to me that even with the abundance of Chinese restaurants in our country, satisfying my Roast Goose hunger was not exactly an easy task.  It all changed when I saw that Man Ho was opening in the new Marriott West Wing.

Man Ho (萬豪) is the literal Chinese translation for Marriott.  Bringing the flavors of Man Ho in Manila is none other than Chef Chef Law Wui Wing, a Hong Kong native who has been cooking since he was 15.  He has been an executive Chinese chef in several of Marriott’s signature restaurants in China (the Man Ho in JW Marriott Hotel in Shanghai, the Pearl Restaurant in Beijing Marriott Hotel City Wall and the Four Seasons Restaurant in Marriott China Hotel in Guangzhou).  He also spent time in Japan which can be seen in some of the Japanese inspired Cantonese dishes.  Chef Law assures us that there is no MSG in the food he serves.  He prides himself in the best ingredients, which is why he imports only from the best places if it cannot be found here in Manila (an example would be the signature Roast Goose).  A fan of casual conversations with guests, he makes sure that they are happy so that he can be happy in return.  He prides himself in the quality and being honest in the food he serves.

Public Holidays in Singapore in 2017: How to Maximise Your Annual Leave For Trips

December 7, 2016 by Bino Leave a Comment

As 2017 draws near, it is once again time to check out the official publication of Singapore public holidays from the Ministry of Manpower. You know the drill each year. Look out for the dates of the 11 standard holidays, see if the date for Deepavali is confirmed and then determine whether there are any potential long weekends for the coming year.

It is shaping up to be a wonderful year if long weekends are your thing. Jetstar has even planned ahead and rolled out a package offering flights to seven destinations during the seven long weekends for 2017. It’s a great idea but options were only limited to their network.

Artemis Bar & Grill – Refreshing Mediterranean Dining in Singapore’s CBD

December 4, 2016 by Bino Leave a Comment

Not long ago, I wrote about my experience in Artemis Bar & Grill in CapitaGreen – one of the most atmospheric rooftop bars in Singapore. Aside from the myriad of cocktails that they had on offer, I found their bar bites to be quite memorable (I still have fond memories of that Wagyu Hanger Steak!). My experience then was more or less limited to the open-air bar area but I did remember that the venue also came with an elegant dining hall which catered to the well-heeled executives of Raffles Place.

You can check out my previous experience at Artemis Bar & Grill here.
