Hotel Review: Shangri-la’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Tainan – Shuttle Bus to Tourist Attractions & Night Markets

January 7, 2018 by Bino Leave a Comment

Shangri-la’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Tainan is just one of a handful of luxury hotels in the southern Taiwanese city of Tainan. Located just steps away from the city’s main railway station and 5 to 10 minutes drive from the tourist attractions of the city center, the 333-room hotel serves as an excellent gateway for those on a short jaunt to the buzzing city. The hotel is also just next door to the Far Eastern Plaza department store which has a couple of restaurants in their basement.

On a tour around Taiwan, I spent two nights in Tainan and chose the Shangri-la’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Tainan due to the reliable Shangri-la brand and wonderful location. The hotel was converted from an office building in 2007 which explains the interesting atrium found in the upper floors. There aren’t many properties in Taiwan that are built in this way. This particular Shangri-la differs from most of the chain’s other city hotels in a number of ways. Firstly, there is a slightly higher inclination towards leisure travel, as evidenced by free regular shuttle buses to city attractions and night markets. Also, this is one of the few Shangri-la non-resort properties I know that offers family rooms.

Hotel Review: Courtyard by Marriott Singapore Novena – Infinity Pool & Stunning Rooftop Views

December 19, 2017 by Bino 1 Comment

Courtyard by Marriott Singapore Novena opened its doors in November 2017 as the first hotel to rise in the Novena area for quite some time. The new property is situated close to Health City Novena and is meant to cater to medical tourists as much as leisure travelers and even those coming to Singapore for business. While the location is not in the city’s central core, the hotel is just steps away from Novena MRT.

I recently stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott Singapore Novena. The property follows a growing trend in Singapore of high lobbies (other hotels with similarly high lobbies include The Westin Singapore, Andaz Singapore and Sofitel Singapore City Centre) with the reception being at Level 22.

Hotel Review: Novotel Singapore On Stevens – Free Minibar & Fantastic Infinity Pool

December 17, 2017 by Bino 1 Comment

Novotel Singapore on Stevens is the latest property of Accor Hotels to open in Singapore, cementing this chain’s status as the largest in the Lion City with over a dozen hotels. The new Novotel property is located around 2 bus stops from Orchard (take the #190 bus from the Orchard Station bus stop to be exact) making the location within a residential neighborhood good for a nice escape without losing the city center convenience.

The Novotel Singapore on Stevens is part of a mixed use complex developed by Oxley Holdings. The building includes the Mercure Singapore on Stevens next door as well as a couple of restaurants and bars in the lower floors. It is the second Novotel property in Singapore, the other being the Novotel Singapore Clarke Quay.

Shuttle Service from Novotel Singapore on Stevens to Orchard Road and Singapore Botanic Gardens

It is worth noting that Novotel Singapore on Stevens provides complimentary shuttle service between the hotel and Orchard Road. Departures occur every half hour from 10AM to 9:30PM daily with the drop-off point being the DFS Galleria at Scotts. The hotel also provides free shuttle service to the Singapore Botanic Gardens with departures at 7:30AM, 8AM, 8:30AM and 9AM from Mondays to Fridays.

Hotel Review: Hotel Il Monte Osaka – Walking Distance to Osaka and Umeda Stations

November 29, 2017 by Bino Leave a Comment

If convenience is what you are after, there are few other properties in Osaka that are as central and wallet-friendly as the Hotel Il Monte located close to Umeda Station.

If you are intending to visit Kyoto as well or flying in/out from Kansai International Airport, the Hotel Il Monte makes for an excellent base in Osaka since the Osaka Station is also located here. You can make the trip without having to change trains.

Hotel Review: Rizal Park Hotel Manila

November 26, 2017 by Bino 3 Comments

Occupying the site of the old Army and Navy Club, the Rizal Park Hotel is a new boutique hotel located a stone’s throw away from Luneta as well as the U.S. Embassy in Manila. The 110-room hotel was developed by Oceanville, the same company which painstakingly restored the property to its former glory.

The building housing the Rizal Park Hotel dates back from 1911. Interestingly enough, it is actually older by 1 year than the Manila Hotel which is a short walk away. The handsome building has had a varied history. It was used as a bomb shelter during World War II and saw some years of use as the city’ architect office in the 1960s. Due to deterioration, the site was degraded to become a construction site for Christmas lanterns and also as a warehouse for the Manila city hall. The restoration of the current building into the Rizal Park Hotel marks one of the very rare instances when heritage buildings in Manila are actually restored and put into good use.

Hotel Review: Hotel The Celestine Kyoto Gion – Value-For-Money Accommodation In the Old Town

November 23, 2017 by Bino Leave a Comment

Located in the heart of Kyoto’s mesmerizing and ancient Gion district, Hotel The Celestine Kyoto Gion is a new property that opened under Mitsui Fudosan Hotel Management Group. The Kyoto property is spanking new, having opened only in September 2017 – one month prior to my stay. I discovered this property during my collaboration trip with Hotels.com.

If sightseeing is your main objective in Kyoto, the hotel is well-positioned with its location squarely within the old town and within walking distance to several temples including Kennin-ji just opposite it. The hotel is also within walking distance (around 15 to 20 minutes) to some of Kyoto’s newer areas such as Shijo-dori and Nishiki Market.
