Hotel Review: Mercure Singapore Bugis

September 1, 2016 by Bino 3 Comments

The new Mercure Singapore Bugis is the eighth Accor hotel to open in Singapore. Located within the vicinity of three MRT stations (Bras Basah, City Hall and Bugis stations), the property replaces the former Midlink Plaza which used to be located in the same Middle Road address. The hotel is also the latest property to embrace loft rooms, an increasingly common concept in Singapore’s hospitality scene. I have stayed in quite a few Mercure properties elsewhere and found the lifestyle-oriented proposition associated with this brand to be attractive. It’s also a wonderful contrast to the more business-centric features of the other Accor 4-star brand – Novotel.

Kwee Zeen at Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort – A Magnifique Sunday Champagne Brunch

August 30, 2016 by Bino 1 Comment

With lush vegetation and a setting that overlooks the sea, there is probably no better venue to hold a Sunday champagne brunch in Singapore than in the relaxing island of Sentosa. Kwee Zeen, the all-day dining restaurant at Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort, proudly offers a Sunday brunch that not only makes you forget about the hustle and bustle of city life, but is also family-friendly.

The Kwee Zeen brunch experience starts a bit later than most – at around 12:30pm. But it also ends later – at 3:30pm! If you are a seafood or meat lover, there are plenty to keep you wanting. The seafood variety here is truly impressive.

Qatar Airways 8-Day Seat Sale to Over 100 Destinations Worldwide

August 30, 2016 by Bino Leave a Comment

Probably the most competitive promo fares I’ve seen coming out from a five star airline (or for any long-haul flights for that matter) this year, Qatar Airways is offering discounted prices to over 100 destinations in its global network as part of the airline’s travel festival.

I have done a bit of browsing and found roundtrip flights to many European destinations going for just over SGD 800 and Americas for as low as SGD 860 originating from Singapore. Even Africa which is rarely on sale is going for just a bit above SGD 800 on Economy. As a keen supporter of traveling to off-the-beaten path locales, QR’s network is hard to beat with flights from Baghdad to Baku, from Kilimanjaro to Kathmandu. Their list of destinations reads like someone’s travel bucket list.

The Clifford Pier at Fullerton Bay Hotel: Peranakan Delights By Chef Philip Chia

August 23, 2016 by Bino Leave a Comment

The Clifford Pier at Fullerton Bay Hotel is running a Peranakan cuisine promotion with dishes prepared by renowned chef and author, Philip Chia. For the stunning bayside location and  elegant setting, prices are reasonable and start at $18 (up to $26) inclusive of rice and a small side of achar. As of this writing, there is only a little over a week left for this promotion so hurry if you are looking for a quick Peranakan fix in the heart of the city.

Diners are treated to a variety of options that include the most common Peranakan dishes such as Ayam Buah Keluak to a most curious Ayam Pedas Siam, with its subtle Thai touches.

Route 88 Set Menu at SKIRT at W Singapore – Sentosa Cove

August 22, 2016 by Bino Leave a Comment

SKIRT at W Singapore – Sentosa Cove has launched a new Route 88 menu incorporating some of the most popular dishes of the restaurant at a more reasonable price ($88++ for three courses, available Monday to Thursday). The steakhouse serves some pretty mean steaks and I still have fond memories from my previous time there earlier this year (check out my previous review of SKIRT at W Singapore – Sentosa Cove). We all know that a good steak in Singapore easily costs north of $80++ so this set meal actually offers some good value for those wishing to indulge in some good meat without having to break the bank.

The set menu allows diners to choose a starter, a main and a dessert. If you can’t decide what to order in SKIRT’s ala carte menu, Route 88 helps to narrow down your choices.

Hotel Review: Crowne Plaza Changi Airport New Wing (Business King Room)

August 21, 2016 by Bino 2 Comments

Crowne Plaza Changi Airport recently unveiled a new 243-room extension to complement its current structure, bringing the total room number to 563. It has been two years since my last stay at Crowne Plaza Changi Airport (to read my review of the main wing, click here) and I remember my first experience there to be wonderful – among the twelve best staycations I’ve had in Singapore. I totally loved the resort vibe, spacious rooms and soundproofing done on the property. Recently, I was invited by the hotel to return for a staycation to have a look at the new rooms.

The new wing of the hotel is located in a separate building which is around 5 minutes walk from the main wing. From the second level, a walkway leads to a separate lift lobby where the 10-storey new wing can be accessed. There are only two room types in the new wing – a 38 square meter Business Twin and a 28 square meter Business King. For this particular stay, I spent a night in a Business King room.

#AirNZonTour: A Peek Into Air New Zealand’s Premium Economy and Economy Skycouch Seats

August 21, 2016 by Bino Leave a Comment

Yesterday, I attended Air New Zealand’s #AirNZonTour roadshow, an exhibition which offered a peek into the airline’s award-winning Premium Economy and Economy Skycouch seats. I had never flown with Air New Zealand before but I’ve heard good things about them from aviation bodies. Skytrax awarded them with the best Premium Economy product for 2016. On a personal basis, New Zealand is also one of my favorite travel destinations and it’s a country I certainly don’t mind returning to again and again. With Air NZ’s direct route to Auckland from Singapore, I have another option for my next visit.

Dimsum Brunch at Cherry Garden (Mandarin Oriental Singapore)

August 14, 2016 by Bino Leave a Comment

I stepped into Cherry Garden in Mandarin Oriental Singapore for its weekend dimsum brunch on a rather quiet Saturday morning. The restaurant actually starts its first seating quite early – at 11am – so the timing suits early risers like myself. I had eaten a couple of times at Cherry Garden previously but never tried the dimsum brunch before. Being a dimsum lover, I naturally wanted to give it a try. The ala carte set up similar to the likes of Hai Tien Lo and Jade piqued my interest – with the price at SGD 68++ being somewhere in the middle of Yan Ting’s SGD 108++ and Jade’s SGD 39++ where the spectrum of hotel dimsum brunches are concerned.

Like its other competitors in the 5-star category, Cherry Garden’s dimsum brunch is not merely a showcase of unlimited dumplings and spring rolls. There are also a variety of hot dishes to try and I managed to check out both the lighter snacks and heavier dishes during my dining experience there.
