Unkai Sushi, a Japanese restaurant located inside Orchard Rendezvous Hotel, has unveiled their seasonal 8-course omakase lunch menu and it is priced at only $68.
Unkai Sushi is helmed by Chef Eugene Lam who used to come from prestigious restaurants such as Hide Yamamoto, Ashino and Sushi Mieda, where he trained as a sushi and kitchen chef. This is a cozy space hidden deep within the ground floor lobby of Orchard Rendezvous Hotel. The 30-seater restaurant offers omakase as well as ala-carte sashimi and sushi offerings and comforting rice bowls. Ingredients vary depending on the season and are typically sourced at the peak of their freshness.
I recently dropped by to try Unkai Sushi’s S$68++ omakase. The price range is a welcome addition to the range of omakase options in Singapore.
The 8-courses starts with two delectable seasonal appetizers to whet the appetite
This was followed by two kinds of seasonal sashimi. At the time of my visit, the sashimi consisted of tuna and sea bream.
A chawanmushi of the week warms things up with silky smooth egg custard. This was a luxed up version of chawanmushi topped with delightful ikura.
The 4th course was a gindara miso yaki of smooth black cod lightly seared with a touch of miso. The sablefish possessed a buttery texture and quickly disintegrated in my mouth.
The sushi course comprised of three seasonal sushi, using premium quality Japanese rice seasoned with a unique blend of umeboshi vinegar. We had buttery otoro fatty tuna belly, sweet and creamy hotate scallop and a delicate and tender shiromi kinmedai (golden eye snapper).
The menu culminates with a mini chirashi don (additional $38 to upgrade to a magic bowl) presenting a treasure trove of diced seafood on a bed of rice. The one we had above was the magic bowl and instead of assorted diced sashimi, we had decadent servings of fatty tuna and ikura topped with a plop of uni in a mini bowl. We were advised to mix everything up which resulted in the creamy uni embedding into the rice. This was so good and I would not mind a regular version of this to have for lunch or dinner.
The last course before dessert was a bowl of heart-warming miso soup.
Finally, the meal is rounded up on a sweet note with ice cream dessert. At the time of our visit, it was matcha ice cream.
To thoroughly enjoy the new $68 omakase lunch in the best seating, this menu is available only for diners who make a reservation at the sake bar or private room. It is not applicable for sushi counter seats.
In this era of sky high prices, a S$68 omakase is a rarity. For this price, I would say it is quite good value and well worth a visit. Ingredients used are commensurate with the price and Unkai Sushi is a nice option if you would like to enjoy an omakase meal but are on a budget.
Aside from the S$68 set, Unkai Sushi also has a few other variations of their omakase. For lunch, the 彩 Aya menu is priced at $88++ and the 真 Shin menu is priced at $138++. For dinner, the 月 Tsuki menu is priced at $138++, the 花 Hana menu is priced at $188 while the Umi Chef’s Choice menu is priced at $238++.
