Hotel Q! Berlin – Avant Garde Boutique Hotel in Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm

One of the most unique hotels that I’ve had the pleasure of staying in is the Hotel Q! in Berlin. In a city that is known for being cool and edgy, boutique hotels have essentially proliferated across town. Hotel Q! which is located in the Charlottenburg neighborhood, is one of the best known, having been designed by architectural firm GRAFT and a darling among the celebrity set.

The unconventionality was apparent from the moment I stepped in the property. From the outside, it’s an unassuming white building on a side street of high-end Kurfurstendamm but the interiors tell another story. The lobby was decked in blood red with bold curves while the furnishings seem to have been inspired by The Jetsons. In the true style of a  boutique hotel, staff members were dressed snazzily in full black and an iMac was available for guest use. It also helps that the hotel is just minutes away from the S-bahn – Savignyplatz station to be precise.

There was no shortage of surprises as I made my way to the room. It was more spacious than the 20sqm that was advertised, and certainly had more than the usual trappings of a boutique hotel. Overall, I could best describe my room as futuristic with a sultry touch. With its whiteness, the room looked like one of those pods that one would expect to see in a sci-fi film, except this one had a bathtub right beside the bed and an iPod dock/speakers! To top it off, a wall painting covered the ceiling, ensuring guests that the faint image of a beautiful woman is the last thing they see before they call it a night.

My welcome plate consisted of two pieces of fruit, a bottle of sparkling water and some Haribo gummy bears (this is Germany, after all) set conveniently beside the in-room tub that I unfortunately did not get to use during my stay. That being said, there was also a shower area for those pressed for time.

Food

My room stay came with breakfast, which was served in the hall adjoining the lobby. Hotel Q!’s breakfast offerings essentially consisted of two parts. The first was a buffet section. The second was a made-to-order selection of items including eggs, omelet, waffles and pancakes.

The buffet was a well-stocked affair, consisting of pastries, various cold cuts, cheeses and other dairy products. The highlight for me though was the made-to-order selection. I ordered waffles and it came out all milky and tender just the way I like it – perfect with maple syrup. All the while, the staff members were very accommodating, and carefully explained the food items. All in all, I was quite impressed with the breakfast selection especially since most boutique hotels don’t focus much on f&b or might not even have any. But Hotel Q! certainly pulled out all stops to match the assortment with larger big name hotels.

Verdict

This hotel has many things going for it – a great location for commuting, shopping and even for airport transfers, a compelling contemporary design that attracts visitors tired by the staleness of big chain hotels and some nice touches that leave guests with an overall good experience with their stay. By this measure, I believe this hotel will stay very relevant and in people’s top of mind (or at least near it) in the years to come when it comes to the category of ever-growing design boutique hotels in Berlin. It certainly is in mine.
