Desserts are an essential part of any festive dinner table and no other sweet treat is more evocative of the Christmas season than log cakes. Dessert chefs are known to be very competitive by rolling out highly creative pastries each year. It might still be quite early for Christmas but a few bakers have already started rolling out their log cake selections for 2021. Without further ado, here is the list for the year – I will update it as and when more brands come online with their offerings.

tcc (The Connoisseur Concerto)
tcc is offering a number of log cakes for Christmas 2021. Highlights include the Beam of Joy (S$44.94) log cake which features creamy 100% Mao Shan Wang durian pulp in a spongy chocolate cake and coated with bittersweet chocolate shards; the Aurora (S$62.06) log cake which blends matcha cream and pistachio as well as the Ruby Rhapsody (S$62.06), a marriage of raspberry and yuzu.

Swensen’s presents its range of ice cream log cakes for Christmas 2021. Bestsellers include the Sticky Chewy Log (S$19.80), a cake version of its popular sticky chewy chocolate ice cream flavor as well as the Jolly Buttercup (S$19.80). The latter makes use of a Christmas-only ice cream flavor – that of malted peanut buttercup. Both log cakes weigh 300 grams.

This year’s festive confectioneries from Shangri-la Hotel Singapore will once again include the popular Cajette de Fraises (S$75). The name literally means “crate of strawberries” and the cake is topped by luscious fresh strawberries on a bed of vanilla sponge and honey yogurt mousse. For a decadent chocolate treat, check out the Black Truffle Intense Noir Log Cake (SS80). The amount of chocolate is as intense as it sounds coupled with velvety cream and black truffle.

Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza
Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza will once again offer its popular Signature Chocolate Fudge Log Cake (S$28.80/55.20). The cake comes with a soft and pillowy chocolate sponge and silky mousse wrapped in a layer of luscious chocolate frosting. It is available in 2 sizes – 500 grams and 1kg. For fruity options, check out the Pear Belle Helene Yule Log Cake (S$55.20). This cake is inspired by the traditional french Pear Belle Helene and comes with layers of light dulcey and praline chocolate mousse; pear compote; dark chocolate glaze and a crispy speculoos base. Alternatively, they are also offering the Champagne Rose Cheesecake Log Cake (S$55.20). It is filled with Raspberry Cremeux, Raspberrty Confit, White Chocolate Mascarpone Cream and Red Crispy Kranfil, interposed with a Joconde Sponge.

Fairmont Singapore’s specially curated Christmas collection this year features some relatively unique flavors. The Chestnut Cremeux (S$52/80) with blackcurrant marmalade offers the prefect balance of sweetness and acidity. It is available in 2 sizes – 500 grams and 1kg. For chocolate lovers, indulge in the Grand Cru Chocolate Yule Log (S$52/80) filled with citrusy orange confiture.

InterContinental Singapore will be offering 3 types of log cakes for Christmas 2021. The Santa’s Igloo (S$98) is exquisitely shaped exactly like one and comes with coconut mousse with blackberry lime jelly and coconut lime sponge cake. For something more traditional, the Red Velvet Buche de Noel (S$98) is made up of whipped dulcey cremeux with spiced apricot confiture, red fruit royaltine and red velvet sponge cake with lemon cheese frosting. Finally, a niche flavor from them is the Vegan Cinnamon Log Cake (S$98) – a chocolate sponge cake with cinnamon clementine marmalade, whipped amatika cream and ganache.

Four Seasons Durian
Durian lovers can rejoice in Four Seasons Durian’s Signature Mao Shan Wang Chocolate Genoise Yule Log (S$98). The cake is made with pure 100% Mao Shan Wang durian puree with layers of moist and fluffy chocolate genoise sponge. Those who prefer durian-free options can also check out their Strawberry Chocolate Genoise (S$88) and Hazelnut Chocolate Genoise (S$98).

Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium
Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium will once again offer its Chocolate Banana Log Cake (S$88, 1kg) as a takeaway item. This cake has been a mainstay in the hotel’s buffet and was also a bestseller for takeaways last year. This particular log cake is baked using Executive Chef Chua Yew Hock’s secret recipe. For a fruity kind of log cake, check out their new Raspberry Sleigh Log Cake (S$88) which is laced with tangy raspberry and smooth vanilla crémeux.

The Fullerton Hotel
The Fullerton Hotel ushers in the yuletide season with 4 types of log cakes including the Tropicana Mango Tango Yule Log Cake (S$75), Marakyu Matcha & Yuzu Yule Log Cake (S$75) and Vanilla Mont Blanc Yule Log Cake (S$75). Their yearly bestseller which is the Signature Black Forest Yule Log Cake (S$75) will be available for takeaway as well. The latter is comprised of Valrhona Guanaja mousse, Morello cherry compote, dark chocolate ganache and chocolate sponge.

Pre-orders are available for Emicakes’ log cakes. For Christmas 2021, they are offering three types of flavors: the D24 which features durian in a chiffon filling, Black Forest with chocolate mousse and sweetened cherries and Caramel Almond with caramel mousse with chunks of almonds rolled in a chiffon cake. Their log cakes are 20cmx9.5cmx7.5cm, weigh 800 grams and are good for 5 to 8 persons.

Montreux Patisserie started out as a home-grown bakery along East Coast Road and was founded by Chef Lee Lay, an award-winning chef. For Christmas 2020, they have several types of festive cakes, ranging from log cakes, gateaus and even a star-shaped cheesecake. Capitol Kempinski Hotel will once again offer its bestselling Kempinski Lady in Red Opera Log (S$84). Weighing 1.3 kilograms – this luscious treat can feed an entire family (and more) with its layers of almond sponge, ganache and chocolate filling. For something more traditional, you can also opt for the Classic Hazelnut Yule Log Cake (S$82) which weighs 1kg.

For a local flair, check out Baba Chew’s Chendol Yule Log Cake. This 1kg pastry is loaded with red bean mousse, Gula Melaka, pandan sponge cake, chendol jelly and grated coconut crumble. This is a regular part of their Christmas offerings. I have tried it last year and recall it being one of the more memorable log cakes I’ve tried.

For sweet endings, JW Marriott Singapore South Beach is offering 3 types of festive logcakes. Take your pick from the decadent Aurora Chocolate Log Cake ($85), the White Chocolate Citrus Log Cake (S$78) or Sweet Raspberry Log Cake (S$78). The latter is especially apt for those who prefer the fruity sort of base. The cake comes with Raspberry Mousse, Vanilla Cremeux, Raspberry Confit, Almond Sponge and Raspberry Crunchy Base.

Conrad Centennial Singapore
Take your pick between Conrad Singapore’s Santa’s Sleigh (S$75) or Reindeer (S$75) log cakes. The Santa’s Sleigh comes with Sacher Sponge, Royal Crunch, Chocolate Ganache, Crémeux, Chocolate Agar-agar and Praline Mousse while the Reindeer comes with Pistachio Sponge, Mango Jelly, Mango Mousse and Coconut Cream.

Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort and Spa
The Sentosa resort’s yule log is the Noel a la Singapourienne (S$98), exclusively curated by Pastry Sous Chef Kelvin Kan. It has a snowy pure white facade complete with slivers of coconut flakes and a creamy pandan gula melaka interior – a uniquely Singaporean favorite.

Four Seasons Singapore
Four Season Singapore’s Yuzu and Kumquat Yule Log (S$880 weighs 800 grams and comes with a refreshing kumquat gelée gem inside a decadent yuzu chocolate mousse. For an unconventionally shaped Christmas cake, you can check out their Christmas Tree Velvet (S$108). The pastry comes cone-shaped like a Christmas tree. Cocoa-based red velvet sponges are layered with creame cheese and hand-piped with matcha buttercream and adorned with chocolate pearls. Alternatively, they also have the Korean Strawberry Tart (S$88) which comes topped with Korean strawberries and classic almond frangipane in a vanilla-flavored tart.
