January 18, 2024 by Bino Leave a Comment

Receive S$250 cash via PayNow or Apple AirPods Gen 3 with Magsafe Charging Case (worth S$274) or Samsonite Volant Spinner 68/25 EXP + 2x Apple AirTag (worth S$570.80) when you apply and get approved for the OCBC 90N Visa, OCBC 90N Mastercard, OCBC 365 or OCBC Infinity Cashback or OCBC Rewards credit cards as new cardholder (those who have not held an OCBC card the past 12 months). Spend S$500 within 30 days to receive the sign-up gifts. Sign-up through the individual card links below. Promotion ends on the 15th Feb 2024 (11:59PM).

Annual fee is waived for the first year for all the cards listed below. OCBC usually waives the annual fee for succeeding years as long as you actively use the card but if not, you can always cancel to avoid paying the annual fee.

Note that this offer is valid only if you apply via the below exclusive links (direct application with OCBC doesn’t count for the promotion). Why is that so? Singsaver actually acts as an aggregator and partner for OCBC cards and from time to time, Singsaver and OCBC may jointly fund the gift in order to split the marketing expense between them.

After clicking submit on your credit card application, make sure to take note of your Application Reference Number. You will have to fill out a redemption form (automatically sent to your email once you make a card application) in order to be registered. If you choose to get the cash gift, do ensure that the phone number you fill out in the form is the same as the mobile number for you to receive PayNow payments.

Once your card is approved, remember to spend at least S$500 (can be in multiple transactions) within 30 days of receiving your card in order to receive the reward. You will get an email within 90 days with instructions on how to claim your gift. If you are looking for ways to spend S$500 within a month, there’s that time-honored method of buying vouchers from NTUC Fairprice and paying for it with your credit card.

Here are the OCBC cards that qualify for the promotion:

The Perfect Tohoku Itinerary – From Aomori to Fukushima in 4 Days

January 14, 2024 by Bino Leave a Comment

While Japan is a popular travel destination, not many international travellers make it north of Tokyo (with the exception of Hokkaido). The Tohoku region or the northern side of the island of Honshu encompasses the prefectures of Miyagi, Yamagata, Iwate, Akita, Aomori and Fukushima. It is a treasure trove of onsen hideaways, medieval castles, scenic mountains and lakes, impossibly picturesque towns and world heritage sites sans the tourist hordes.

During my latest trip to Japan, I wanted to do something different and instead of focusing on the usuals such as Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto; I headed north to explore the side of Japan that not many get to see.

In this itinerary, I show how you can explore Tohoku conveniently in a few days, departing from Tokyo.

6 Instagrammable Spots to Visit During Your First Trip to South America

January 13, 2024 by Bino Leave a Comment

South America is a continent rich in diverse landscapes and awe-inspiring destinations. Among these, several iconic spots stand out as must-visit locations for anyone who appreciates natural beauty and cultural significance. I have personally just returned from memorable trip to Latin America and in this list, I dive into the continent’s enchanting wonders – from the dazzling mountain landscapes to manmade wonders.

Rainbow Mountain in Peru

Rainbow Mountain in Peru, also known as Vinicunca, is a stunning geological wonder that is characterized by its vibrant colors, formed by the presence of various minerals and sedimentary layers.

The unique palette of colors displayed on the mountain ranges from deep crimson to bright turquoise, making it a photographer’s dream. Its scenic beauty and peculiar natural formation have made Rainbow Mountain one of the most visually striking sites in Peru.

Located in the Andean highlands of the Cusco region, at an altitude of approximately 5,200 meters above sea level, this instagram-worthy destination entails a challenging hike for adventure-seekers. Discovered only in 2015, it has quickly become one of the must-sees in the Cusco region.

Unknown to many, there are actually a number of Rainbow mountains in the area. The most iconic one is Vinicunca. An alternative ranbow mountain which is slightly easier to get to is Palccoyo.

How to get there: Rainbow Mountain can be done as a day trip from Cusco and usually involves an early departure of around 4 to 5AM from the city. You can book tours from Klook here. A day tour usually includes breakfast and lunch.

Machu Picchu

machu picchu

machu picchu

This is one spot in South America that requires no introduction. Machu Picchu, also known as the “Lost City of the Incas,” is a 15th-century Inca citadel nestled high in the Andes Mountains of Peru.

Machu Picchu holds immense cultural significance as a testament to the ingenuity, creativity, and organization of the Inca civilization. This UNESCO World Heritage Site continually inspires awe and curiosity.

The site also has spiritual importance for the local Quechua people. It’s believed that the location was chosen due to its proximity to sacred mountains, or apus, which serve as protectors and sources of spiritual energy.

Although it is by no means the only Inca site in Peru, it is undoubtedly the most popular due to its incredibly scenic location. Tourism is a significant aspect of Machu Picchu’s modern-day relevance.

How to get there: The city of Cusco serves as the gateway to Macchu Pichu and is a 1.5 hour flight from Peru’s capital, Lima. From Cusco, a journey to Machu Picchu involves a bus and train ride and another bus ride. Visitors can also choose to do a 2-day hike via the Inca Trail. You can also book a day trip to Machu Picchu here.

Many Latin American airlines’ websites are blocked in Asia and your best bet might be to book flight tickets through an online travel agent. I booked my inter-regional flights with Trip.com.

Iguazu Falls

iguazu falls

iguazu falls by boris kasimov

Iguazu Falls, located on the border of Argentina and Brazil, is a magnificent and expansive waterfall system. It spans approximately 1.7 miles (2.7 km) in width, giving it the title of the largest waterfall system in the world. These falls are the result of the convergence of the Iguazu River and the Parana River. The breathtaking sight of the falls is enhanced by the presence of numerous small islands scattered along the system.

In addition, the rich ecosystem around Iguazu Falls also hosts a diverse range of flora and fauna. This subtropical forest is home to several endangered species of birds, mammals and reptiles. Some noteworthy animals to look out for include capybaras, howler monkeys and jaguars.

How to get there: As the falls lies between three countries, you can choose to either fly to the Argentine or Brazilian side to see it. The Foz do Iguacu Airport at the Brazilian side has more connectivity, hosting international flights from elsewhere in South America as well.

Where to Stay: For a truly luxurious experience, you can stay at Belmond Hotel de Cataratas located in the Brazilian side of the falls. The hotel is located within the national park, allowing guests access to the falls before the hordes of day trippers arrive.

In the Argentinian side, the Gran Melia Iguazu comes with direct views of the falls from some of the rooms and public areas.

Cusco

cusco

Cusco, situated in the heart of the Peruvian Andes, is a city steeped in history and vibrant local culture. Once the capital of the Inca Empire, it offers a blend of ancient architecture, lively streets, and modern-day attractions. Highlights include the Cusco Cathedral. Built in the 16th century with stones from an ancient Inca ruin, it houses several important paintings and relics. The San Blas Neighborhood is a trendy area with cafes, bars, artisans, workshops and a beautiful Baroque church.

Locals gather at Cusco’s Plaza de Armas, the main square which serves as a hub for social and cultural activities. If you are there on a Sunday, you can see locals from the rural areas descending there with their bright traditional costumes selling knitwear or posing with tourists.

Tip: Cusco is located 3,350 meters above sea level. It is best to spend a day or two without intense activity after arriving in the city.

Though a visit to Cusco is often viewed as a gateway to Machu Picchu, the city itself offers a myriad of unforgettable experiences, with its rich heritage and vibrant local culture not to be missed.

How to get there: Cusco is a 1.5 hour flight from Lima, Peru’s capital. There are also international flights to Chile, Colombia and Bolivia. I booked my regional flights with Trip.com as many Latin American airline websites are blocked in Asia.

Where to Stay: Viajero Kokopelli Hostel is a beautiful property located in a colonial building in the historic center of Cusco. Aside from dorm beds, they also have private rooms with plush beddings. Among luxury properties, the Palacio de Inka is set in a restored palace. The rooms are spacious and have balconies/terraces. Some come with butler service.

Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro, also known as the “Cidade Maravilhosa” or the Marvelous City, is a vibrant city in Brazil known for its stunning landscapes, beautiful beaches, and lively culture. It boasts a perfect blend of natural beauty and urban charm, making it a popular tourist destination.

christ the redeemer by armin gruber

Its landmarks need no introduction. The iconic Christ the Redeemer statue stands tall atop the Corcovado Mountain, overlooking the city. It is considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Sugarloaf Mountain, another significant landmark, offers breathtaking 360-degree views of Rio de Janeiro. It is accessible by a cable car and is also a popular destination for rock climbing and hiking enthusiasts.

copacabana beach by john o’connell

For beach buffs, Copacabana and Ipanema Beaches are tourist favorites. The two beaches are known for their golden sands, vibrant atmosphere and picturesque surroundings. Visitors can enjoy a range of activities such as sunbathing, swimming, and surfing.

How to get there: Emirates flies to Rio de Janeiro from Dubai 4x a week, where visitors from Singapore can easily connect to. You can check out Emirates’ 10% off promotion for Citi Cards here.

Where to Stay: Miramar by Windsor Copacabana is conveniently located in the Copacabana neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. The hotel is just steps away from the beach. Rooms are well-appointed and some come with a sea view. Get up to 20% off Agoda bookings with Citi Cards.

Salar de Uyuni

salar de uyuni

salar de uyuni by mickael t

Salar de Uyuni, located in Bolivia, is the world’s largest salt flat, spanning over 10,582 square kilometers. The salt flat’s formation dates back to the evaporation of several prehistoric lakes, primarily Lake Minchin. As the lake gradually evaporated, it left behind a thick salt crust. Over time, the crust hardened and formed the vast, white expanse that is Salar de Uyuni today.

salar de uyuni reflection by patrick nouhailler

It is very popular with tourists due to its mirror effect. During the rainy season, water accumulates on the salt flat’s surface, creating a thin layer that reflects the sky above. This creates an awe-inspiring illusion of walking on the clouds.

cacti island by jan beck

Other highlights include Cacti Island or Incahuasi Island, this rocky, cacti-covered island is situated in the middle of the salt flat. It offers an interesting contrast to the surrounding white landscape and is home to ancient cacti weighing several tons and growing as tall as 12 meters.

How to get there: The city of Uyuni serves as the gateway to the Salt Flats. The city is connected to Bolivia’s capital La Paz from where there are direct flights to Lima, Peru or Bogota, Colombia.

Where to Stay: Various hotels in the area use blocks of salt from the salt flats as their primary construction material. They offer tourists an opportunity to experience the unique culture and environment of Salar de Uyuni. Casa de Sal, located in the town of Uyuni, features furniture, art work and even the walls that are made from salt.

Review: Lo Quay – Not the Vietnamese Cuisine That Most Would Imagine

December 8, 2023 by Bino Leave a Comment

In a city where there are plenty of Vietnamese restaurants to choose from, Lo Quay makes its debut with a re-imagination of the Southeast Asian cuisine. Helmed by Chef Quynh Brown who previously came from contemporary izakaya Zuma, Lo Quay means “discover” and is her invitation to guests to explore her thoughtful, bold reinterpretation of Vietnamese cuisine. Here, the country’s vibrant and familiar flavors are recast with contemporary techniques.

The first thing I noticed when I entered the ground floor shophouse unit that Lo Quay occupies are the number of artworks hanging on the wall. Many of them depict memories that Chef Quynh had growing up in Saigon and practicing rooftop farming with her grandfather during a challenging time in the country. These art prints were actually made using AI, although the extremely vivid and lifelike details made me question that.

Review: Fraser Residence River Promenade – Luxurious Serviced Apartment & Modern Gadgets

December 7, 2023 by Bino Leave a Comment

Fraser Residence River Promenade is a new serviced apartment opened by Frasers Hospitality. It occupies the 3 warehouses that used to be Zouk’s location before the nightclub moved to Clarke Quay. Situated in Jiak Kim Street, the 72-rooms at the property are available for stays of a minimum of 6 nights.

The structure that makes up the Fraser Residence River Promenade is made up of two parts. The first is the series of 3 heritage warehouses where the expansive lobby and events space are located. The second is a newer structure where the actual rooms are found. The latter is similarly low-rise, with only 5 floors.

NEW: Shoukouwa Shinjidai – Spin-Off of Two Michelin-Starred Shoukouwa & Saint Pierre in Conrad Singapore Orchard

December 1, 2023 by Bino Leave a Comment

What do you get when you combine the sensibilities of 2 Two Michelin-starred restaurants? Newly opened Shoukouwa Shinjidai, inside the ground level of Conrad Singapore Orchard, is a creative collaboration between Chefs Emmanuel Stroobant and Kazumine Nishida, both Two Michelin-starred chefs of Saint Pierre and Shoukouwa respectively.

The 13-seater venue is named Shoukouwa Shinjidai, with Shinjidai 新時代 referring to a new era. It aims to describe the kaiseki-inspired cuisine with an innovative edge. Rather than a straightforward Japanese kaiseki restaurant, you’ll find western presentation methods as well.

Shoukouwa Shinjidai is open for both lunch and dinner. They offer the 10-course Kaze (S$250) or 12-course Mio (S$380) for lunch and the 12-course Mio (S$380) and 14-course Yume (S$480) for dinner. Each course here is quirkily named after a song – some which are part of the restaurant’s playlist as well.

NEW: Takahashi Restaurant Singapore – Stunning Omakase Restaurant in Mohamed Sultan

November 26, 2023 by Bino Leave a Comment

Another new omakase restaurant has opened in Singapore, and this time it is Takahashi – the famed restaurant in Tokyo’s Ginza district. The Singapore outlet, which is located in Mohamed Sultan Road, is the brand’s first international outpost.

The Singapore outlet is helmed by Chef Rinto Sasagawa who has worked under Chef Jun Takahashi for a number of years.

The interiors of Takahashi is perhaps one of the most zen that I have encountered in Singapore. With rental prices at a premium in the Lion City, most omakase restaurants have little space aside from the counter, chef’s preparation area, kitchen and perhaps one small private dining room. In Takahashi however, they even have a miniature zen garden filled with sand, rocks, bamboo and even a small fountain. It feels absolutely mesmerizing to see this inside a restaurant!

For this occasion, I tried their Shugetsu dinner set which goes for S$320 which includes 9 courses plus 6 types of nigiri. They also have lunch sets available starting from S$180.

6-Day Northern Spain Itinerary: From Bilbao to Santiago de Compostela by Train

November 3, 2023 by Bino 2 Comments

Spain is one of the world’s most visited countries. While the usual images that travelers associate with the Southern European nation typically revolve around Andalucian white towns, paella or the unique architecture in Barcelona; there is a side to Spain that travelers often miss – and that is its northern coast.

I recently went for a trip in the northern regions, starting in the Basque Country and ending in Galicia and the contrast between that and more popular regions such as Andalucia, Valencia, Barcelona or even Madrid couldn’t be any greater. The regional variations extend to the architecture, the cuisine and the landscapes. It is just so much greener in the north that I often had to pinch myself to convince I am still in Spain.

In this guide, I aim to share my Northern Spain itinerary from Bilbao to Santiago de Compostela, which can be done by train or bus. I personally went on a 6-day/5-night train ride through the Costa Verde Express which allowed for excursions in these places through a combination of train or bus. The below itinerary can also be done independently using a combination of public trains, buses and car hire.

When traveling by train or at the countryside, do note that the wifi onboard can be unstable so I also had roaming mobile data during my trip. Jetpac’s Globetrotter e-sim allows for data roaming in 50 destinations through an easy installation process.
