Hotel Review: Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok – Equally Suited for Business & Leisure

Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok is a stylish luxury hotel located in Sukhumvit Soi 24, just within 5 minutes walk from the Phrom Pong BTS Station and situated close to some well-known upscale malls in Bangkok – namely Emporium and Emquartier. For Hilton Honors members, it is a category 4 property.

I stayed at the Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok for a night after ending a business trip earlier that same week in the Thai capital. There is a Doubletree Hotel located just next door. Stepping into the property for the first time, I noted a distinct flair which was a bit of a departure from the very business-like and contemporary style which defines the other Hilton properties. The overall design of the Sukhumvit hotel is heavily influenced by the 1920’s prohibition era in the United States and this is told through two sculptures with a back story named Jay and Daisy.

Junior Suite at Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok

I went up to the lobby for registration and was directed to the Executive Lounge for check-in formalities. Wifi access is free here although to log-in, I was asked to use an access code rather than input my room details. There are 4 room types in the 280-room hotel ranging from the Deluxe Room up to the Executive Suite. For this particular stay, I was lodged at one of the Junior Suites. At 54 square meters, the room size would have qualified as a proper suite in other places.

The room has a slightly mysterious and masculine look, with the whole prohibition era feel making itself felt through the taupe color scheme and sleek wooden décor. I love the king-sized bed which is noticeably high – similar to the one at the Conrad Centennial Singapore. For some reason, the window doesn’t span the whole length of the room but perhaps I am nitpicking.

The seating area is situated directly in front of the bed and the staff was very thoughtful to leave behind some welcome amenities – a couple of macarons, a small slice of pineapple cake as well as a porcelain figurine.

All rooms at the Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok come with a large 40 inch LCD TV. The working desk is especially suited for busy executives. I found a stationery set placed in a corner with office supplies neatly stacked and an ergonomic chair helps to ensure a comfortable time behind the desk. I love how the power outlets here are done to cater to universal plugs so there is absolutely no need to bring adapters here. For convenience, outlets are also situated by the bedside to allow you to charge your phone and set up your own alarm without having to stray too far.

The bathroom is nothing short of impressive and is very spacious in the Junior Suite. It comes with a his and hers sink and a semi-partitioned shower area (with rainshowers) with the tub easily accessible from there.

The tub itself is pretty much a defining feature of the room with its sleek oval shape and semi-detached nature with a window facing the bedroom. For privacy, there are controls inside the bathroom which you can use to turn down the blinds. Like in other Hilton properties, toiletries are from Peter Thomas Roth.

I left the room later that afternoon and did not return until the evening. I came back to find turndown service already done with my bed neatly laid out and the curtains set up for a good night’s sleep.

Executive Lounge at Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok

Located at the 4th floor of the hotel, the Executive Lounge offers food and refreshments throughout various times in the day. Upon check-in, I was handed by the staff with a sheet containing the lounge benefits. I am listing them here for everyone’s perusal:

• Daily breakfast – 6AM to 11AM
• Afternoon tea from 2PM to 4PM
• Evening cocktails from 5:30PM to 7:30PM
• All day refreshments and fruit selection
• Complimentary 2 hour meeting room usage per stay
• Complimentary 2 pieces of clothing for pressing, per person, per day (non-cumulative)

During my stay, I managed to drop by for evening cocktails. There was a decent selection of food including some dimsum, pastries and a salad selection. One of the notable things about the executive lounge in Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok is the focus on vegetarian items. I spotted a whole section of vegetarian canapés during my visit there.

There was a staff member busy making cocktails upon request using Mekhong rum which seemed to be a hit with guests. I tried the Mekhong Passion – essentially a cocktail with passionfruit.

I would have loved to just sit and relax in the executive lounge for an entire afternoon. The interiors are definitely one of the most well-appointed (and unique!) that I have come across so far. It was also very spacious with plenty of seating available -including an outdoor space – so I never had to worry about finding a place to sit even during the typically busy evening cocktails.

Facilities at Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok

If you have the time, the gorgeous infinity pool at the topmost floor is not to be missed. Due to the high elevation, it is particularly breezy up there even during a scorching afternoon in Bangkok so it’s a wonderful place to relax and cool off. Also, the view of the city skyline is amazing during sunset. This is one pool where an evening dip is highly recommended! For a workout or two, the gym which faces the pool is not particularly big but it has most of the equipment you’ll need for cardio or strength training.

Breakfast at Scalini, Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok

Due to my executive lounge access, I had the option of having my morning meal either at the lounge itself or at Scalini – the inhouse Italian restaurant which also doubles as the breakfast venue. To experience a greater variety, I opted to dine at Scalini instead. If you choose to eat here for breakfast, do note that the breakfast hours vary slightly – it runs from 6AM to 10:30AM during weekdays and 6AM to 11AM during weekends and public holidays.

The breakfast spread consists of your usual items such as pastries, egg station, local and western delights. Though the spread was not as extensive as in other 5-star hotels in Bangkok, I particularly liked was the pastry selection – in particular the banana bread which is also being sold downstairs at Mondo for takeaway. The Fruit Danish is another highlight and you won’t go wrong with either.

Verdict

Most Hilton properties are set up as business hotels but Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok manages to turn things around by equally attuning itself for business and leisure. It is not so easy to marry the two but the property seems to get it right by offering standard touches such as fast wifi internet and comprehensive office facilities amidst unique interiors, sleek facilities and a most convenient location.
