Few hotels in Rio de Janeiro manage to balance luxury, style and a genuine sense of place as successfully as Emiliano Rio. Located directly on the more scenic southern end of Copacabana Beach, this boutique five-star property offers a more intimate alternative to Rio’s chain hotels while still delivering a world-class experience.

The hotel is part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World or SLH, a chain of independent boutique properties united by a sense of uniqueness. It is also one of 2 Emiliano hotels in Brazil, the other one being in Sao Paulo.
The distinctive white exterior of the property, one consisting of honeycomb balcony panels that can be slid open or shut depending on guests’ preferences, ensures thousands of potentially different permutations when it comes to the building facade. With its remarkable Brazilian design, the hotel stands out immediately from the other buildings in that stretch.
I stayed in Emiliano Rio during my short sojourn in Rio de Janeiro and I have to say, it’s one of the most unique boutique properties I have ever stayed in.
First Impressions
The hotel immediately stands out with its distinctive white perforated façade, inspired by the traditional cobogó architectural screens commonly found in Brazil. Behind the contemporary exterior lies an atmosphere that feels refined yet relaxed, embracing Rio’s beach culture without sacrificing sophistication. Designed by Studio Arthur Casas and Chad Oppenheim, the interiors are dominated by whites and muted colors, with occasional pops and bolder choices seen through the furnishings. This is quite a soothing and apt choice for guests who come back to the relative tranquility of the hotel after a long day out.
Unlike many large luxury hotels, Emiliano Rio feels personal from the moment you arrive. With only 90 rooms, service is attentive and discreet and there is always a feeling of being recognized, creating the impression of staying in an exclusive beachfront residence rather than a conventional hotel.
Upon check-in, I was informed by reception that the stay also comes with 2 pieces of clothing for complimentary pressing and a 15-minute massage experience at the spa.
The Rooms
The guestrooms are spacious, modern, and thoughtfully designed with natural materials, soft lighting and calming neutral tones. The rooms to choose here are those with balconies overlooking Copacabana Beach, offering front-row seats to one of the world’s most iconic urban coastlines.
For this particular trip, I stayed in Emiliano Rio’s Ocean Emiliano Suite – perhaps the most sought-after room type in the hotel. Stepping into the suite, the first thing that immediately captured my attention is the view. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame an uninterrupted panorama of the Atlantic Ocean, while the private balcony offers a front-row seat to one of Rio de Janeiro’s most iconic scenes. For all the comforts of the airconditioned bedroom, I found myself constantly drawn back to the balcony throughout my stay.
Inside, the suite strikes a balance between luxury and comfort. Rather than relying on flashy décor, the design embraces understated elegance with warm wood finishes, soft neutral tones and contemporary furnishings. The separate living room creates a residential feel, making the suite particularly suitable for longer stays. There are 2 TVs in the suite – one facing the living area and the other facing the bed.
Comfort is clearly a priority. The beds are exceptionally comfortable with oversized square pillows that are among the most comfortable that I have ever slept on.
The marble bathroom is equally impressive, featuring a deep soaking tub, his-and-hers rain shower and Japanese-style toilet, while premium amenities such as complimentary Havaianas sandals further elevate the experience. Toiletries are from Santapele – a Brazilian brand.
The Rooftop: The Star Attraction

The highlight of Emiliano Rio is undoubtedly its rooftop terrace. The glass-sided infinity pool appears to merge seamlessly with the Atlantic Ocean beyond, while panoramic views stretch across Copacabana Beach toward Sugarloaf Mountain. For rooms without balconies, this is a worthwhile alternative to soak in the beach view.
Owing to the boutique proposition of the hotel, the pool here can be thought of as more of a scenic relaxation space – especially the side of the pool facing the beach. It has an L-shape with the other side facing the wall offering more possibilities for serious swimming when it’s crowded at the part with the beach view.
Unlike some of Rio’s larger hotels, the rooftop remains relatively exclusive due to the property’s smaller size. The result is a peaceful atmosphere where guests can enjoy cocktails, light meals and sunset views without feeling overcrowded.
Breakfast at Emiliano Rio
Breakfast is one of the hotel’s strengths. Rather than a standard buffet, guests are treated to a high-quality à la carte experience in Emile Restaurant featuring fresh ingredients and attentive service. Highlights in the menu include made-to-order pancakes, avocado toast and of course, Brazil’s famous pao de queijo (cheese bread) which is served alongside the customary bread basket and cold cuts platter. Juices are served fresh.
The avocado toast was my go-to breakfast there during my 2-night stay at the hotel. Needless to say, guests are allowed to order as many items as they want from the à la-carte menu.
Emile Restaurant Dining
The hotel has put in a lot of effort to make its inhouse restaurant, Emile, a dining destination in its own right by bringing in new Chef Bernabe Simon Padros, who originally hails from Argentina and who has had stints in Lima’s Central and Kjolle – both regular fixtures in lists of best restaurants in the world.
The restaurant embraces a contemporary approach to Brazilian cuisine, drawing on local ingredients while incorporating subtle international influences. The result is a menu that feels modern and creative without losing sight of its Brazilian roots.
The menu changes depending on the season. But I tried a couple of memorable dishes there. One was the Pork, Lentils and Mango. The meat was so finely cooked – so tender that it had an almost beef-like quality and this was complimented by a side of mango sauce and lentils.
The Cocoa, Coffee, Miso dessert was also divine and to this day, I still have fond memories of the intensity of the accompanying coffee ice cream.
Aside from Chef Bernabe’s excellent cuisine, special mention needs to be made to the servers for their excellent knowledge of the dishes and their spot-on recommendations on what to order.
With its elegant setting, attentive service and thoughtful cuisine, Restaurant Emile proved to be much more than just a hotel restaurant. For guests staying at Emiliano Rio, it is well worth setting aside an evening to experience Chef Bernabe’s interpretation of contemporary Brazilian gastronomy.
Beach Experience
During my stay at Emiliano Rio, I was told by my butler about the dedicated beach service. In the stretch of Copacabana’s beach directly in front of the hotel, guests can enjoy reserved seating, towels, umbrellas and attentive assistance, making it easy to transition between the hotel and the ocean. However, it was raining during my entire stay so I was not able to experience this first-hand.
Santapele Spa & Gym
For guests looking to unwind after a day exploring Rio de Janeiro, Emiliano Rio’s Santapele Spa offers a tranquil escape from the upbeat energy of the city. Drawing from Brazil’s thriving wellness culture, the spa features a range of treatments inspired by both traditional and contemporary wellness practices with an emphasis on relaxation and rejuvenation. The dimly-lit and serene atmosphere immediately sets the tone while the treatment rooms provide a peaceful sanctuary away from the crowds outside. As mentioned previously, guests staying at Emiliano Rio get a complimentary 15-minute massage experience. Guests can also choose to top it up with a paid treatment for a longer experience.
The hotel gym is also notable to have floor-to-ceiling windows and a small balcony that has a view of Copacabana Beach.
Final Verdict
Emiliano Rio succeeds by offering something increasingly rare: a luxury hotel that feels both stylish and genuinely connected to its surroundings. It combines boutique intimacy with five-star amenities, all set against the backdrop of one of the world’s most famous beaches.
For travelers seeking a sophisticated base in Rio de Janeiro—particularly couples, luxury leisure travelers, or anyone wanting a more exclusive alternative to the city’s larger resorts—Emiliano Rio is one of the finest places to stay on Copacabana.
What I loved: Rooftop infinity pool, beachfront location, personalized service, spacious rooms with balconies that look out to the beach, exceptional breakfast.
What could be better: Small rooftop pool and premium pricing may not suit every traveler.
