Newton Hawker Food Centre opened in 1971 and is the first hawker centre that opened with a courtyard garden setting to complement Singapore’s image of a garden city. This is also the first hawker centre to open in Singapore as a standalone with an accompanying wet market.

This hawker centre is famous among both locals and tourists due to its convenient location near Orchard Road and its wide variety of food.

Newton Hawker Centre was also featured in the famous blockbuster movie ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ with movie stars raving about Singapore Street food and the iconic Singapore night market scene.

Below are some of the famous food stalls you should try when you come here.

The Perfect Itinerary for Uzbekistan & Tracing the Ancient Silk Road From Tashkent to Khiva

June 12, 2023 by Bino Leave a Comment

Mention the word Uzbekistan and thoughts of the ancient silk road immediately comes up. Cities such as Bukhara and Samarkand have been etched into many a wanderluster’s minds as being synonymous to adventure and the exotic. These days, Uzbekistan is a frequently touristed destination, though nowhere near popular places such as Thailand or even India. This particular itinerary shows you how you can do the main silk road cities of Uzbekistan in just one week.

Tip: When entering Uzbekistan, you will need to declare exactly how much cash and valuables with you. The key is that after your trip, you should not leave the country with more foreign currency or precious metals than what you came in with. It may be quite a hassle upon arrival as it causes a bit of a queue at customs.

HSBC TravelOne Credit Card – Is It Worth Getting?

June 5, 2023 by Bino Leave a Comment

HSBC has recently launched a new general spending credit card called the HSBC TravelOne Credit Card which offers a range of benefits for frequent flyers. Although it is fundamentally a general spending card, it is designed to cater to the needs of travelers based on the benefits that come with it. These benefits include access to airport lounges, travel insurance and rewards points that can be redeemed for flights.

One of the key features of the HSBC TravelOne credit card is that it is linked to nine frequent flyer programs, including some less common carriers. This means that cardholders can earn rewards points on their HSBC TravelOne card, which can then be transferred to their preferred frequent flyer program. In this article, I aim to break down the features and the cost of getting the HSBC TravelOne Card and determine if it is worth getting.

P.S. Before you apply for this card, make sure to read this article until the end, especially if you don’t have any existing HSBC card. You’ll thank me later.

Latest Credit Card Sign-up Bonuses & Promotions in Singapore (June 2023)

June 4, 2023 by Bino Leave a Comment

I have a number of posts in scattered about featuring various credit card sign-up promotions. To make them easier to view, I have compiled them here. For my readers who are used to my bank-specific promotions – I present to you a one-stop glance into what three major card issuing companies – HSBC, Citibank, DBS and Standard Chartered are offering at this point in time. Promotion durations are also listed below for convenience.

The credit card sign-up gifts are indeed quite attractive but do note that to get the higher valued gift, you would need to be a new cardholder. A new cardholder is defined as one who has not possessed a card by the respective card issuing company for at least 12 months. A common strategy by some folks is that they sign up for a card by xxx company, cancel the card after receiving the gift, wait for another 12 months then reapply.

Review: Kappo Shunsui – Under the Radar & Theatrical Omakase With Sake Pairing in Hongkong Street

May 26, 2023 by Bino Leave a Comment

Kappo Shunsui is a Japanese restaurant located in Hongkong Street, Singapore. The restaurant specializes in kappo-style cuisine, which is a traditional Japanese dining style that emphasizes the use of fresh, seasonal ingredients and simple preparation techniques.

Getting here requires a keen eye for detail. Just like some of the other establishments located in the Hongkong Street stretch, the entrance to Kappo Shunsui is via an unassuming door, with just a delicate flower hung at eye level to distinguish it. Once inside, diners will have to journey through a darkened corridor to reach the 12-seat dining chamber.

Compared to other omakase places, Kappo Shunsui deliberately wants diners to see the preparation process in detail. The chef’s preparation area is akin to a performance stage, where his every slice and chop is projected on two screens for diners to see.

The menu at Kappo Shunsui features a variety of dishes, including sashimi, sushi, grilled meats, and seafood. The restaurant also offers a selection of sake to complement the food. The dinner omakase experience ranges from the S$280 Minamo Course to the S$380 Kacho Seasonal Omakase to the S$480 Premium Omakase Shunsui. For this particular occasion, I tried the S$480 menu which came with sake pairing.

Hotel Review: Shangri-la Singapore Horizon Club Business Room

May 19, 2023 by Bino Leave a Comment

Shangri-la Singapore recently reconfigured some of its guestrooms in the Tower Wing to launch a new room category – the Horizon Club Business Room. These rooms take on the same slightly diagonal + alcove layout that typically distinguish rooms in the Tower Wing but with added furniture suitable for remote work thrown in. This is in contrast to the Valley Wing’s opulent style or the Garden Wing’s resort aesthetics.

I recently stayed at the Shangri-la Singapore as a guest of the hotel to check out this room category. As someone who occasionally works on the go, I was curious to see how easy it was to work remotely from the hotel.
