White Rose Cafe at York Hotel Singapore is popular for its Penang Hawker Fare but not many realize that its ala carte menu is also worth a closer look. The venue refreshed its menu recently and while I am a fan of the old menu, I was also curious to see what new dishes they are able to offer with the revamp.
One notable addition to the menu is actually a comeback dating from 2013. The Mee Siam (S$14) may be pricier than the ones you find in hawker centers but the price is justified with the more premium ingredients such as a large prawn, hefty portions of tau pok, egg and beansprouts. The highlight is the flavorful broth which has just the right mix between spicy and sour. Overall a fantastic dish that makes me hungry just thinking about it.
Another star in the menu is the Seafood Mee Goreng (S$17) which carries a nice wok hei flavor. The noodles are actually stir-fried in tze char style over high heat. There’s also plenty of seafood in there including generous portions of prawns, squid, sliced fish. Make sure to garnish it with fresh lime for that extra zing!
I have to say that White Rose Cafe does its noodle dishes pretty well. Even the Vietnamese Beef Pho (S$17) which is not a local dish was done nicely with tender beef slices interspersing with delicate rice noodles. The soup is actually beef marrow stock that’s been double-boiled for 8 hours, giving it a nourishing taste.
For those preferring less carbs to go with their meal, the Seafood Curry (S$15) is a good option. The aromatic curry is filled with prawns, squid, black mussels and clams. You would want to slather the curry on white rice.
I found the Vietnamese Pork Chop (S$17) to be a less compelling choice. While it was absolutely fine for me and I could make out the tinge of lemongrass flavor, I thought the more impressive noodle dishes overshadowed it.
Those who know me know how much I love Tang Yuan but I thought S$9 for 3 pieces was rather expensive compared to what I am normally used to. For some reason, White Rose Cafe is charging more than what even some fine dining Chinese restaurants are pricing for this dessert.
Verdict: Come here for the Mee Siam and Seafood Mee Goreng.
