I went last week to Rosso Vino (Italian for “red wine”) near the Robertson Quay Hotel to sample their dishes. The small, privately-owned restaurant prides itself on serving homemade Italian dishes prepared using traditional methods from Southern Italy. Sourcing the freshest ingredients they can get both locally and internationally, the restaurant provides guests with delicious, authentic Italian cuisine paired with excellent wines.
Rosso Vino is nestled between the Singapore River and Robertson Quay Hotel. Guests have the option to dine outside by the river’s edge or inside the cozy restaurant. Since it was a warm night, I opted to dine indoors where I enjoyed examining the various knick-knacks adorning the venue. There is warm lighting all around the restaurant, providing a nice, warm ambiance suitable for family get-togethers, small parties with friends, and even date nights.
Service was fast, with food arriving relatively quickly compared to most restaurants. But don’t let the speed fool you; food arrived hot and fresh from the kitchen, and the staff were all warm and polite, demonstrating the well known Southern hospitality. The maître d’ even stopped by to chat and give advice on the wine pairings for the different dishes.
To start things off, I had the Burrata fresca di Andria ($19.90). The generous portion (150 grams!) of cheese was refreshingly light and contained a strong, cheesy flavour but without any unpleasant smell; a real treat for those who enjoy cheeses. Even better, this item is suitable for vegetarians and includes some salad greens and cherry tomatoes, both of which were very fresh and crisp.
Next in line was the pasta: Spaghetti marinara ($25.90), which is best paired with some white wine. Italians are known for their pasta, and this spaghetti with mixed seafood in light tomato sauce doesn’t disappoint. As expected, most of the restaurant’s pasta and all their sauces for pizzas and pastas are handmade by the chef. The large serving of pasta is topped with a variety of seafood such as shrimp, squid, scallops, clams and mussels.
For the main course, I had the Costolette di maiale ($27.90) which is basically 2 quarter slabs of marinated baby back ribs served with some roasted pumpkin and barbeque sauce. This is my first time trying spicy barbeque ribs but I can definitely say I’m a fan! Tender, savoury meat that slides right off the ribs accompanied by some well-seasoned roasted pumpkin makes this something that I would definitely recommend to my friends as a must try!
And what meal in any real Italian restaurant would be complete without tiramisu for dessert? Rosso Vino’s Tiramisu ($15.90) is a homemade dessert with espresso coffee, mascarpone cheese and ladyfinger biscuits. Sweet and indulgent, with plenty of cream, a distinct coffee flavour, and lightly dusted with cocoa powder, this tiramisu is a sweet note to end the evening on.
