J65, the all-day dining restaurant at Hotel Jen Tanglin, has recently launched its “themed nights buffet.” Basically, the buffet theme changes on most days – an international buffet on Sundays and Mondays, Asian on Tuesdays, lobsters of Wednesdays, live barbecue on Thursdays and seafood on Fridays and Saturdays. I recently headed down to J65 to check out the new buffet offering. As it was a Tuesday, I was treated to the “Colours of Asia” spread that evening.
roast beef – j65
The buffet consists of a few sections and while the theme that evening was Asian, you still get your perennial buffet sections. I spotted a more toned down version of fresh seafood while the carvery is a section that you should not miss for its roast beef!
salad station
There is a also a salad section with fresh greens and light bites – a mainstay for the buffet any day of the week.
laksa
One of my favorite items from the Colours of Asia buffet was the laksa. Made-to-order by the chef, it came to me brimming with prawns, eggs as well as that unmistakably rich coconut milk broth.
kueh pie tee
I still have fond memories of the Kueh Pie Tee I had at the club lounge during my previous stays at Hotel Jen Tanglin and made sure to try the ones here at the DIY section. You can go crazy and put in as much prawns as you wish!
chili crab
If you prefer your seafood, you get a good variety here with regional specialties such as tandoor crab, chili crab, slipper lobster and a whole seabass to enjoy.
Indian and Sri Lankan specialties
South and Southeast Asian cuisine are also well-represented with the likes of satay and even fried oyster omelette which came with copious amount of plump oysters. There is also a good selection of dhall, curries and my personal favorite butter chicken for that extra spicy kick.
teh tarik prepared on the spot
You do get a good variety on Tuesdays with the buffet spread even extending outside with an alfresco section featuring teh tarik as well as various kinds of Indian and Sri Lankan breads and curries.
ice kachang
For those with a sweet tooth, you can make your own ice kachang using a variety of ingredients.
purple yam cake
Last but not the least, the dessert station at J65 is still very much reminiscent of their past buffets with goodies neatly tucked into small bottles as well as brightly colored cakes for diners to savor. But one item that really caught my eye was the purple yam cake. You might not have space by this time for anything sweet but I wholeheartedly recommend having at least a slice. The yam filling is evidently authentic even from the first bite!
J65’s themed nights start from now until the end of May 2017. The dinner buffet is priced at SGD 55 from Sunday to Tuesday and SGD 65 from Wednesday to Saturday.
