Hilton Singapore has launched a high tea buffet that is sure to please those looking for an upmarket dining option that is easy on the wallet. Unlike the norm when it comes to these light afternoon meals, the high tea buffet here, which is held at D9 Cakery, starts early from 12 noon and ends at 3PM. Technically, this is a buffet that you can have for lunch and even the food is consistent with that proposition. The buffet spread is noticeably heavier than the typical afternoon tea that most folks are accustomed to. With 6 live stations ranging from roast meat to Japanese and even a generously filled cold seafood counter, this is quite possibly the most value-for-money afternoon tea buffet in Singapore.
I went to check out the buffet recently. As mentioned there are several buffet stations to choose from. And while the format here deviates from the 3-tier offering one sees elsewhere, light items such as quiches, dimsum and pastries are available. There is also a wide variety of teas from TWG included in the buffet – at least 10 – and served in both hot and cold. Coffee is from Illy.
The seafood section includes the likes of tiger prawns, clams and mussels. This is probably the first time I’ve seen a cold seafood section in an afternoon tea buffet as the premium items are usually reserved for pricier lunch and dinner buffets that can go up to almost S$100 per person.
A 14-hour slow roasted wagyu beef leg graces the carvery. Again, it’s not something I would come to expect during an afternoon tea buffet so it’s just great I could indulge in this during lunch time.
At the Japanese specialty corner, there are various types of rolls available including ‘unagi’ eel, ‘ebi’ fried prawns, soft shell crab and perennial sushi favorites like salmon, prawn and ‘kohada shelk’ gizzard shad fish sushi.
Local fare is also well-represented here. Those looking for a taste of Singapore can go crazy with the satay or oyster omelette, the latter which is prepared upon request.
One of the strengths of D9 Cakery is naturally the desserts. Here, Executive Pastry Chef Cindy Khoo’s Japanese-inspired creations shine. The selections at the dessert section most closely resemble an “afternoon tea” with goodies like sakura velvet, royal hazel, belle, carrot cake, citron tart and pecan walnut tart. There are also 5 types of macarons – my personal favorite was the raspberry-flavored one. Those with a sweet tooth can even finish the meal with fruits and marshmallows soaked with the chocolate fountain. How’s that for afternoon tea?
Hilton Singapore’s D9 afternoon tea buffet is available every Saturdays from 12 noon to 3 pm. It is priced at S$48 per person, roughly in line with what afternoon tea offerings in other hotels are charging. But you get so much more here.
