The upcoming Chinese New Year in 2021 which will be the Year of the Ox will fall on the 12th of February 2021. Despite the current situation, there will undoubtedly be an abundant selection from some of the top Chinese restaurants and hotels for yu sheng (lo hei), pen cai and other traditional delicacies for your reunion dinner. This year will be slightly different in the sense that more establishments will be offering takeaway or islandwide delivery services for Chinese New Year reunion dinners. If you choose to dine-in, do note that under current regulations, the maximum number of people in a table is 8. You will also be required to don your mask while tossing yu sheng.
Without further ado, I’ve tried my best to list them down here for your convenience. This list will be expanded over the next few days as new establishments come onboard with their Chinese New Year 2021 reunion dinner and takeaway offerings so do bookmark it for future reference.

Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium

xin’s traditional pen cai (source: holiday inn sg atrium)
Takeaways: The highlight of Xin Cuisine’s takeaway offerings for this lunar new year is the Alaskan Crab with Salted Egg Yolk Sauce Yu Sheng (S$98 / S$138). The dish is drizzled with a hint of Salted Egg Yolk sauce that gives a tangy twist to the traditional yu sheng taste, coupled with the umami of fresh Alaskan Crab. I have personally tried this yu sheng and what I like about it is that it possesses just the right balance of salt and acidity. For an authentic and reasonably priced pen cai, the restaurant’s Xin’s Traditional Pen Cai (S$288 / S$428) for takeaway brims with premium ingredients such as whole abalone, fresh scallop, deep-fried fish maw, sea cucumber, live prawn and roast meat to name a few. Theirs is one of the best pen cai I have tried for that price point. For CNY, the house signature Roasted Duck with Tea Leaves (S$76 for whole duck) is also available as a takeaway item.

Reunion Dinner: yi by Jereme Leung rolls out 4 different menus for CNY reunion dinners starting from S$168++ per person up to S$208++ per person. There is also a special ensemble of ala carte items made available just for the festive season. Lest you think sweet and sour pork has no place in fine Chinese dining, I would recommend a go at their Slow-cooked Sweet and Sour Pork Rib with Fried Bun (S$18). This is very different from the usual fried sweet and sour pork that you see elsewhere with the red sauce. For dessert, their Fermented Rice Wine Ice Cream (S$16) is one of the most unique sweet ending I have seen offered for CNY and one spoonful into it with the unmistakeable sweetness of rice, totally encapsulates the provincial Chinese slant of this restaurant.

Carlton Hotel Singapore (Wah Lok)

wah lok longevity poon choi (source: wah lok)
Takeaways: Wah Lok at Carlton Hotel Singapore tends to stick to tradition but one new item from them this year is the Truffle Abalone Lo Hei (S$128). This delightful treat melds Wah Lok’s classic Abalone Yu Sheng with actual black truffles and truffle oil. I have personally tried it. The truffles were fragrant and immediately perceptible even while tossing but wasn’t overpowering once consumed. The truffle flavor went well with the dressing, with the pungent aroma complementing the tangy salad. Another new item this year is the Longevity Poon Choi (S$408). This is one of their bestsellers and has remained unchanged in the past few years that I have been checking out Wah Lok’s CNY menus. I tried it again in 2021 and I would have to say it’s still one of the more reliable pen cai out there. The pot comes with baby abalone, scallops, sea cucumber, dried oysters, roast duck, pan-fried live prawns, pork shank, fish balls, mushrooms, black moss, Tianjin cabbage, radish and yam.
Reunion Dinner: Highlights in this year’s CNY reunion dinner menu at Wah Lok include Steamed Live Soon Hock, Pan-fried Hokkaido Scallop with Golden Sauce, Braised Whole Abalone and more.
