Artemis Grill, the contemporary Mediterranean rooftop grill in the heart of Singapore’s Raffles Place has recently revamped their bar menu. With new bar manager Rico Deang joining recently from CUT by Wolfgang Puck, the new cocktail menu prominently features a fine mix of European and tropical-themed cocktails. Ingredients such as passion fruit and kaffir lime leaves are used alongside rosemary and citric-based components. Last week, I was invited for the media launch of the new menu and aside from the new drinks, I also got to sample Artemis’ small bites.
While Artemis is not the first rooftop bar that I’ve been to in Singapore, I was pleased to note that the bar was well-ventilated given its outdoor setting. One surprisingly gets the feeling of being in an air-conditioned area which contrasts with the heat and humidity I experience elsewhere.
Update: I returned to Artemis Bar & Grill to check out their dinner menu. You can read my review here.
There are fifteen new cocktails available -all priced at SGD 22++ – under the direction of Rico Deang with names like “JP Rizal” (the Philippine national hero) and “Don’t Call Me Baby.” The one that I tried was the Lota Bell. Intensely tropical in presentation and ingredients, the cocktail is a mix of passion fruit tea, lime and vodka. It tasted sweet at the first sip with the intensity of the vodka kicking in not soon after. It’s best to not be carried away by the sweetness of this concoction as it still packs a mean punch.
Artemis’ prowess in food is also apparent even with the bar bites. While a proper meal in the adjoining dining room would be most warranted if you fancy your steak and seafood, the taste and quality of their tapas is nothing to sneer at if I go by my experience from the bar menu launch.
My personal favorite was the Wagyu Hanger Steak which also happened to be the crowd favorite that night. Tender and intensely flavorful with the oregano and coriander dressing, I could not help but grab for seconds and thirds.
The Fried Olives is a bar bite that’s new to me and Artemis coats it with breading that left it beyond recognition as your typical olive. It was crunchy at first bite – and with a dash of yoghurt, a great snack to pair with cocktails.
Other dishes we had included the Harissa Prawns with a dash of sweet chili sauce, Oysters and three types of Souvlaki. The Petite Fours were quite unexpected for a bar offering but I must say the tarts were pretty good and ended the experience on a high (and sweet) note.
All in all, I had a marvelous time at Artemis. While there are many rooftop bars to choose from in Singapore, this particular venue not only presents some creatively concocted cocktails but also has a superior food offering to show for. The new menu makes it even better as a hangout spot not just for after-work drinks but even for the weekends. Having tried their bar menu, I am most curious to take that short walk down to the dining room next time to sample the food.
